Here are my thought and opinions on the Cobra Jet Viper System that I installed on my 2017 Yamaha 190 FSH.

First off let me start by saying that I accepted the product at a discounted rate with the understanding that I would review the product. I have not been compensated or swayed in either direction by anyone, and what you are about to read is my opinion and only my opinion.

I will start at the beginning. Ordering and paying for the Viper system was very easy and painless. A quick email and a simple paypal transaction was all it took. I promptly received feedback that gave me info on the product, including installation instructions.

I believe I received the box 2-3 days after that. The Viper system was packaged simply but adequately. The small hardware was bagged together in a bag and the Viper unit was shrink wrapped to a piece of cardboard and everything was placed and shipped in a box.

I had printed out the directions from the email and used those for the install. The install SHOULD have been very straight forward. As you read the directions they seem a bit confusing until you actually dig in and start working. I ran into a small problem, that was caused by me. I cross threaded the bolt (actually the hole the bolt goes into) that holds the Viper to the Jet. Getting that bolt through the several spacers, through the Viper then up into the jet of the boat, all while fighting gravity, flying nats....a slight buzz, and dripping thread locker....can cause the threads to not go strait in.. Again, My fault...just be careful when tightening that bolt, make sure it is straight on. I fixed this problem by removing everything, and threading the supplied bolt from inside the jet nozzle down, thus fixing the threads. I then got the rest of the Viper system installed no problem. During the install I came across my only complaints with the Viper.

1. Where the Viper attaches to the bottom of the Jet on the boat there is about a 1 degree separation. They don't sit completely flat with each other. There is plenty of surface area that does contact, however, when it comes to my boat, I am a perfectionist and would like to see the bend in the Viper match up with the Jet exactly. If you haven't installed one, this may not make sense and I'm not sure I can photograph it.. Again it is probably less than a degree, but I think it could be fixed.
2. Directions were OK, and after I installed it, I completely understood what I had to do. However, a simple video of the install would have made a world of difference. I consider myself a fairly competent mechanic and had I not cross threaded the bolt hole, it would have taken about 15 min.

On the water

I recently purchased my FSH this season and I have exactly 5.75 hours of Jet Boat experience without the Viper system. I have been an "out-boarder" all my life and thought of myself as a very capable boater. I never had any issues maneuvering an outboard equipped boat.

Enter Jet Boat.... I had no idea what I was doing. I loved that fact that it was different than what everyone else had, I loved the Low draft, loved the boat...hated that I couldn't put the boat where I wanted it to go. I couldn't figure out why it would do some sort of unwarranted death turn when I idled down...Getting it on the trailer...yeah...sure. So enter the Viper.

The day of my boat test with the Viper system was rough. I was in Long Island Sound with 7-10 knts wind with varied waves. I was at the mouth of a larger river that dumps into the sound on an incoming tide. All of that equals a lot of wind and current trying to put your boat where you don't want it.

Pulling out of the dock in reverse I felt like I had more control of the boat (this portion of the test lasted about 35 seconds). Cruising through the mooring field the steering response was amazing...I would say in no wake mode response for steering was the same as you would expect on an outboard motor. Even with the current and the wind, I was able to wind my way through the clutter mooring field without taking any boats out, which very much pleased my wife, the other boat owners, and myself.

Getting up on plane seemed to happen quicker with the Viper system. It was very choppy 1-3 foot waves and some bigger ones (large ferries coming and going including a high speed ferry) so I was cutting speed and getting back on plane a lot. Steering response at speed was also improved. Putting the boat back on the trailer was also a lot easier than before. Using the no wake mode I was able to glide right onto the trailer.

This outing was a little rougher than I normally go out in, however I feel that it truly showed that the viper does improve the controllablity of the jet boat platform. The biggest/best improvement that I could see with the Viper was maneuverability in the no wake mode. This is very important to me because this is where I spend most of my time while fishing. Being able to zig-zag while looking to mark fish at a slower speed is crucial. For me, it is worth its weight in gold just in that alone. On top of that, it does improve in the high speed turning and getting up on plane as well.

I highly recommend the Viper. If there is anyone in the New England area that would like to check it out on my boat, I'm always looking for fishing partners, feel free to hit me up...

Thank you for your feedback remember this is a new part , On 4 26 I posted this video
on the original thread sorry you did not see it. It took a while to do this as I actually had to mock up a rudder and make a nozzle setup to show how to do the install.

As you can see I know it is pretty close placing the bolt in the bottom of the nozzle and with my hands as bad as they are, I figure if I can manage anyone can.
I place the parts on the bolt and pull the unit forward to start the bolt in place then push it up to the nozzle and turn it in to get it started , so far everyone including myself has been successful in putting the bolt in. As for the angle on the front I actually noticed it was slightly off and corrected it but you had yours before I made the adjustment as I said they were prototypes and so far everyone I have spoken to is very pleased with the results .

Funny I grew up by the tri state stone in MASS and I would not have consider being on the lake this early in the season but that was a long time ago and I guess global warming has contributed to warmer weather patterns there also.

I couldn't be happier. The slight variation will not cause a problem (that I could see). I actually enjoy the boat and don;t get all stressed out about it.

Thank you for this review! The water you tested in is most similar to my waterway....

I took the boat out on a nice day, clear flat waters.... As I had figured the Viper works even better. I did however run into a slight issue.... That issue being a submerged rock pile. When it happened I was going maybe 10-15 mph and the boat lunged forward. I checked in the boat to make sure I didn't have any water coming in, and I didn't so I continued with my fishing adventure. I was about 30 miles from the boat ramp and had no issues cruising back at about 30ish mph. The steering to the right was hard but still acceptable. I could tell there was something wrong, but I was still able to continue. Boat got on plane no problem and I had actually forgotten that I had hit anything until I took the boat out of the water. The viper took all of the impact and got mangled pretty good, HOWEVER, there was NO further damage to my boat. Had the Viper been made out of and harder material I feel that I would have had extensive damage to my jet. Talking to Jeff he said that he had designed it that way on purpose. If I had taken an impact like that on an outboard, I would be buying a new lower unit. I was able to easily remove the Viper. I spoke with Jeff about my next step. He told me that I could try to fix it myself or send it back to him and that it was covered under the product protection plan, which I had not known about. Ship it back to him and he will fix or replace it for 50 bucks... You guys can not go wrong with this product or with Jeff... I am actually going to have this one fixed or replaced and buy a second one in case this happens again so I don't have any down time. Ive included two pics after the incident, and the 28" I got on the outing.

That one really took a hit for sure, I can't wait to get it back so I can see if I can repair it, either way under my warranty even if a car runs into it or in this case a group of violent rocks attack , the part gets fixed or replaced for no more than 49 dollars plus shipping. That holds true for the other steering like the ultimates or magnums etc. it's explained on my new web page. Connecticut rivers are pretty tough on boats I guess.

The river I was in, Thames river in CT was used by native Americans (yes the same ones that now run the two giant casinos in CT) to trap striped bass. They built these huge funnels out of rocks that stick way into the middle of the river. The fish would swim into them on the high tides, and on the low tides they would get trapped. Those funnels are still there. Your fish finder reads 25 feet and bam....rocks... Its a great time...really is.... I got my last boat stuck on one...Jumped out to push the boat off the rocks, and I disappeared..Couldn't touch the bottom...

Are you ready for this ? I received his damaged viper yesterday, and this morning I fixed it and have it ready to send back to him with just a few small marks from where it hit the rocks that unit was messed up however I built some special jigs for my press and had it looking nearly new in just less than an hour including building the jigs. I will admit I was a little worried that I was not going to be able to save it but I was also looking forward to the challenge.

These are model specific for 19 foot boats with the rudders, however a 2017 21 foot with the rudder needs the magnum A K series with the fangs as they are also a model specific system made for the twin engine 24 and 21 foot boats with the rudder. It is a very balanced system and quite effective at all speeds even off power and the fangs provide power steering and excellent reverse control do a search on this web page , lots of posts and info available.
As to the wake wedge question my systems are compatible with it
