I wrote this to Scarab to see what the response would be. I really like the Scarab and the features. I just don't want to be out on lake Erie and have the carbon seal go!

"I am interested in purchasing a 255G in the spring. I have heard a lot of people talk about problems with the carbon seal and electrical issues. Have any of these issues been addressed in the 2018 models? Does the G replace the Platinum? What changes/improvements were made over previous years? Thank you!"

Their response:
Good morning Howard,
Carbon seal issues have been and are being addressed, as we noticed the concern from our boating community. It is always our main goal to provide the best products possible. Secondly, the G does not replace the Platinum as you know it from 2017. The "G" Series is meant to get boaters on the water with all the essentials they need without that enormous price tag. The Platinum is no longer a specific model, rather an interior option you can opt for with a 255 ID. Please note, this interior is not available on the 255 G. Head to our web pages/Build a Boat to take a look through some of the upgrades this year. Some key concepts are the ability to provide dense customization to our models through new graphics, colors, etc. A great feature for 2018 is sound deadening within the engine compartments, but again this is not available with the G series. If you are looking for a something feature rich that you can customize on the spot, we recommend checking out the "ID" series. If you think you'd like to come back and customize later, the G series' available accessories page on our website will be very helpful when transforming a G to an ID.

Kind regards,

Scarab

The issues with the first run boats are being addressed. And now you can use any BRP service center to get you any warranty or maintenance work completed on the engine or pump. If you like the boat, get one.

Wow. Kudos to Scarab!
Seems rather different than the "Yamaha treatment" I received to my warranty inquiries...

Going to (most likely) go with Scarab for my next boat, I just need to see the implementation. I also hope the ACE engines make it into their boats!

I got first class treatment on a boat warranty issue earlier this year (non-BRP related.) - I'm on my second Scarab and loving it.

That's great to hear. I would encourage folks with positive experiences with service and warranty to share them to help paint a full picture of the experience.

Now we just need a scarab or brp dealer to sponsor shelbyville by giving me a new 255 cuddy cabin prototype.

I would love to go for a ride in the 255 and then hop right into the chapparel 2430 for a compare and contrast.
I am guessing each company (glastron included) makes the hull themselves and incorporates the motors and pumps.
I don't know enough about the ACE engines to know much more than I want them, LOL!
For the tinker types the supercharger is begging for mods....
I'll be a good while before I buy another boat, but I am for certain watching closely for quality and reliability! The fact that they are working on the main issues is really good for them.

Hey Howard, we were researching for about 1.5 years and finally made the purchase of a 2018 255 wake and love it! We've bee lucky with the texas weather and taken it out several times already and has a little over 10 hours and the entire family is enjoying every bit of it and excited for summer 2018!

I did, however drive from Dallas to New Orleans to get our boat just because the owner was SUPER informative compared to the dealers here in texas.. sad. But rather then selling to us, he spoke to us for a little over a month, answered all of our concerns that we've read on several forums. Plus now with BRP service centers can provide warranty and maintenance, it was even better, I can take my scarab to the same location as were we take my seadoo. 2-fer!

Anyways, goodluck with your decision, I know it's hard with all the negative, but ScarabMike is awesome if you have any questions , or even this group.

What are they doing for sound? Is there a way we can do it to the older models?

Looks like adding more of the foam. I can tell you it is the real deal. You can clearly hear the difference.

I too have electrical problems with my new Scarab. I have a 2017 255SE purchased new September 2017 in Ohio. I have had issues with the battery draining and I have worked with two dealers and contacted Scarab using Facebook messaging. The last work on the boat was from a different dealer because I moved the boat to my house in Florida. The work was not considered under warranty because I changed the wiring on the master switch per instructions from the tech at the original dealer. Cost me $320 to have the master switch rewired back to OEM and reset the engine reverse module fault. This did not resolve the problem. Even with the master switch off there is a draw on the battery and after parked for two weeks the battery is completely drained. I verified a 129 milliamp draw of between the battery positive post and hot wire with the master switch off. Dealer said there is nothing wrong. Huh? I even bought a new battery. Another $100 out of my pocket. To top it off the anchor door has multiple cracks in the gel coat. Bad decision on my part for purchasing a Scarab.

Just to understand clearly, did you rewire to move the parasitic drain to be off when the switch was off and then you had that undone?

With all drains behind the switch, there should be zero drain when the main switch is off, right?

I don't have a scarab, but it's uncool you are having this issue. I like working on most things myself to prevent added aggravation of having to wait on service.

Hopefully it's something that can ultimately be resolved my sx230 was wired with a parasitic load when the main switch was off, resulting in battery discharge. I moved the load to be behind the switch, and the issue was resolved.

Thanks for helping. I too like to make my own repairs. For example dealer #2 torn the rubber boot off one of the circuit breakers and I asked several times for a replacement but he just ignores me.

After I took the boat out for the first time it was parked for three weeks with the master switch off. When I performed my checks before we headed to the lake I found the battery completely drained. Boat was OEM with no changes. The only wires on the hot side of the master switch are to the bilge and radio for station memory. That is it.

Thinking the battery was bad I installed a new one one. Spent the day on the lake. No issues. I pulled the boat to Florida, take it out then park for four weeks with the master switch off. I am ready to head out and the new battery is completely drained. I charged the battery and spent the day in the Gulf with no problems. Engines are charging the battery fine.

I park the boat for four weeks but this time disconnect the positive cable beforehand. After four weeks the battery has a full charge. Connect to battery and ready to go. I call the original dealer and ask why my battery is draining with the master switch off. The recommendation is to move all the hot wires to the switch side. It was only two wires. Well I missed one wire that was on the hot side so I get a reverse module error during the computer self test. No boating that day. I take it to the local dealer in Florida and was told a warranty would not cover any work because I changed the wiring. They did reinstall the wire I missed and reset the computer but the problem was not fixed and the change was per dealer#1. Dealer #2 said nothing was draining the battery.

I park the boat for four weeks with the master switch off and battery connected. It was completely drained when I checked. I reinstalled the OEM battery and spent the day in the Gulf. I reached 25 hours last week now I have a maintenance warning light illuminated on the dash. Found out that means I have to take the boat to a dealer to have it reset so the boat warranty will be valid. Wait, what boat warranty? Scarab doesn't honor a warranty.

When I checked the amp draw between the battery post and hot wire my Fluke meter shows a 129 milliamp current flow. When I disconnect the radio hot wire from the master switch I still get 129 ma draw. I disconnect the bilge and still get a 129 ma draw.

I checked the resistance of the master switch just to insure the switch is blocking the flow. I read 3.942 M-ohm. I expected infinity.

How can I have a 128 ma parasitic drain through the master switch in the off position? Could there be a master switch internal contacts problem?

Thanks

Are you sure all cables currently connected to the battery + terminal go directly to the main switch?

If you end up disconnecting all, to check the switch, there should be zero continuity in that switch when off. That high resistance value is highly suspect. You could also check the voltage with the switch off in the switched pole.

My apologies as i state these things if they seem basic, it does rehash exactly what you say you checked... The readings are very strange!!

No. The bilge and radio are on the non-switched side of the master. Hot all the time and I only have one battery positive wire to the master switch. When I disconnect these two wires from the master there is still an amp draw. Draw is not coming from the bilge or radio memory. There are no other sources connected to the battery on the unswitched side of the master.

The resistance check was with the battery disconnected but I did not remove the wires to read resistance so the reading was through the wire terminals.

Contrary to dealer #2's technical analysis there is a source consuming electricity through the master switch even in the off position. They did insure the wires were factory correct and moved my GPS hot to the ballast circuit breaker.

The only way that can happen is if the switch is not working correctly right? I would keep all load on the switched side. Nothing but batteries on the battery side. The radio memory will drain the boat in a week or 3.
