Looks like we're getting about 17" of rain, but hopefully the wind is dead before it gets here. No trailer for the pontoon, and I doubt my dock can withstand too much. Not to mention the tree out back I've been talking about having taken down for about 6 months now...
sit tight, you wont have to pay for that tree to drop now ! we're heading to the bunker tonight to pull the pontoon. I'm debating if its safer in the water vs near the trees in the yard. I'd like to think it will lose some energy by roxboro but DAMN this storm is MASSIVE

Ya'll need to keep the families of the Navy in your thoughts and prayers. All the guys stationed on ships in Norfolk will be recalled back to the ship and they will pull out and go to sea, leaving their families and loved ones behind to fend for themselves. It really sucks, but I understand why they do it. I kissed my wife and wished her luck on many occasions back in the day.
gave me a chill reading it, thanks for posting the thought, something that hadn't crossed my mind.

Same is true in the Air Force. We pack up and HurrEvac the multimillion dollar airplanes further inland and say good luck to the families. Bad deal, but part of the job.

So now Boat is safe in garage, Lift is raised up pretty darn high. Do you guys suggest tying lift bunks to the pilings? I’ve heard the lifts can break with too much swaying in high winds. This one may be a Cat 4 or 5 with 150+ winds. Seems keeping the lift from moving around so much would be a good thing.
When I prepped for Harvey last year, I strapped the cradles and lift slings to the pilings to prevent them from swaying. And I took a bunch of pictures for a record of the pre-storm state. I am also with an insurance company that covers our boat house (not many insurance companies cover structures over the water--in Texas, Germania does).

Wind ended up not being an issue (thankfully), but it's something you prepare for.

Looks like euro model shows this shifting towards Charleston once approaches land. Tomorrow should tell a lot.

Ihck...
Ya know, we have been talking about visiting more of the central/east parts of the country more often to end up figuring out a place to retire to. I forget that some of the prettiest places have this type of threat!
Also, we just cut cable 2 weeks ago. No hdtv yet hooked up. We are totally oblivious to this whole thing!

I’m in Charlotte and think I’m going to pull the boat and camper in a grocery store parking deck and ask for forgiveness. I know if I ask them they will say no. Anyone by chance have inside storage availabe in Charlotte by chance? Old warehouse or something?

Thanks!

Good luck to everyone in the path!

I followed @CraigAR's method of strapping my boat down with ground anchors last year during Irma, and it ended up fine. The only thing I added is that I left my tow vehicle attached to it for added support in the front. I'm not sure how it would fare with flooding though which seems to be a big concern with Florence.

Side note, one of our local weather people does some outstanding coverage for these storms. His posts are worth a look even though he isn't in your area.

I picked up my boat from Jordan Lake and brought it home. I keep it in a lower lot that will definitely flood, plus lots of trees around it so not taking the chance. Have it sitting out in front of my house on the street.

I brought it home and covered with a large tarp. Lowered the bimini top to try and reduce the height. Have a ton of bungee cords and rope tied down to the trailer. I use this tarp day to day and don't have a Yamaha cover (yet). I seriously think it will hold up, but who knows. Looks like it's shifting south so we might not get hit as bad here.

Thought we were gonna get slammed in Va beach, but it’s turned down south twice. Glad it’s not headed our way anymore but saying a prayer for those in it’s path. Good luck everyone and stay safe
