I’m buying a surfboat sometime before next season. I need suggestions on boards. I’m not an experienced surfer at all. I’m 5’9 200 and my son is 5’9 130. We used to have a liquid force fish and I could pop up no problem and he could never get up on it. He has no problem with a wakeboard. Seems it was too large for him and he just couldn’t push it under the water. Any good last season leftovers

I've got some good recommendations and great deals currently on my 2019 left overs. I can make some recommendations.

The circumstances with you and your son on the Fish is interesting. I have a LF Fish 5'0" which was our first board. I think the majority consensus is that it's a relatively easy board to get up on and ride. The challenge a lot of smaller riders have is pressing their heels down hard enough to push the board down perpendicular to their feet. Do you think this is his challenge?

Actually I had the liquid force rocket at lik 5’6” I think. He couldn’t push it down with his heels. Probably need 2 boards since so different in weight. I’m just beginning so not wanting to spend a ton. Let me know what you’ve got. I’ll wander over to your website and browse. I bought one of those round paddlboard type things from you earlier in year. Great fast service and shipping.

I'll be testing a new 5'3" Slingshot Coaster with my kids tomorrow, hopefully.
We have had the same issue with H/L Quad with my teen girls, they can not seem to be able to reliably push that (very buoyant) board down - beveled (rounded) edges don't help either. Most of the time they just slide, very frustrating.

I was mistaken myself. Ours is a 5'0" Rocket, I get the two mixed up. My guess it was just the 5'6" size that was the major hindrance. It's very possible we could find a great board for the two of you. I think in long run it would be a savings to you to get one great board as opposed to two mediocre options.

At 130lbs I think a 4'8" would be a great fit. At 200lbs I would gauge you on the border of a 5'0" board or the 5'3" Coaster dependent on wake size and rider skill level. If you've got or are considering adding ballast to your boat or a lot of passenger weight, then I think you have room to compromise.

I think the best options to consider would be.
  1. Slingshot Coaster 5'0"
  2. Slingshot Cobra Cat 5'0"
  3. Slingshot Gnarwhal 4'10"
I don't know that those have to be put in that particular order. They're all pretty awesome boards and uniquely fun. I'll message you a discount code. If you have any more questions on any more boards feel free to ask.

If they have trouble, try having them put their feet a bit closer to the edge of the board, it might give them a bit more leverage. Maybe you've tried already...? Looking forward to your thoughts on that Coaster.

I'm looking for recommendations also. We need a family board to cover dad and kids. I'm 5'11, 200lbs, the girls are 5'4 & 5'6 120lbs, 135lb. Is it possible to get one board for all three?

Hi @Threelakessx, I think it is completely possible. I think it's just a matter of practice and technique for the smaller riders in the group to learn to get up. But once they get it, they get it. I've buyers like @Mainah which had young riders (12yo) as light as 100lbs have success in getting up and riding the 5'0" Coaster. It's very adequate for a rider your size. @Mainah would you have any insight to offer on how the board performs between your riders in relation to their weight range and ability?

The 5'0" Cobra Cat I'm certain would be equally compatible with riders within that range.

Okay, we finally tested the Slingshot Coaster 5'3" which I acquired specifically based on @J-RAD information and recommendations. Long and short: it's the best board, ever. I could not be happier.

Specifically, I had myself (220+), and three of my teenage girls (18, 15, and 13) get up on this thing on the first try. Zero issues, the thing is a Cadillac, but the sharp edge really makes digging it in and popping up on it super easy, it feels effortless compared to my other boards (H/L Quad 4'8", and H/L Shim 4'7").

Thank you, @J-RAD, your advice is very much appreciated!

This is my 13yo, she just popped up and started surfing
103742
BTW - she is naturally goofy (we just force the poor child to do things our way, lol).

Then went my 15yo, she was fooling around for awhile before we all got tired of her act, she could have gone forever.
103743

The 18yo went ropeless for a while, this was the first time she went ropeless I believe, she has had almost no practice this year, all she does is wakeboard. So - that speaks for itself.
103745

Me - no pics as my 18yo was driving (she has the boating permit) and wanted everyone to be focused, but the board is just an absolute blast.

I still love the Quad, it is a very different feel, but the Coaster is easier and more playful at the same time - the QUad feels like a log, lol - even though it is significantly smallerr, how do you do that? I honestly am not sure there can be a better all-around board made, what would you do?

So glad it's living up to expectations. So we're clear, @swatski did not purchase his board from me, but acquired it elsewhere.

@swatski, I appreciate your sharing your review here and I'm glad if information I've shared aided in you. I'm a broken record about this board for a reason. It's great, and just gets better the more time you spend on it.

@Pinhacker71 & @Threelakessx I think this is good confirmation of a great performing board that fits the needs of a broad range of riders.

Would love to get the coaster to replace the Liquid Force Rocket our family is currently rocking. Looks like a fun board to ride.

Coaster XR is the best all around board I have. We have had lots of guests this summer and with only 4 board slots in the racks had to decide which boards to take for wake and surf. The Coaster always goes even when taking 3 wakeboards and has done well for everyone age 11 to 43 and 100 to 200 lbs. It is the easiest board for all ages and sizes to ride and very forgiving to folks who only have snow sports heel toe edgeing experience vs swinging the board like is needed with a surf board. Not everyone was able to ride rope-less first try but everyone gets up and rides for a decent amount of time. For just one board for boats with small wakes I would say the choice is between the 5’0 and 5’3 Coaster. The 5’3 will have more surface area and will likely be easier to find the balance point for rope-less even though it will give up a small amount of quickness.

Having multiple boards is nice as it does have a different feel. My sons and I do prefer our Doomswell Neo for our riding style (aggressive) but we are the only ones who have been able to get up on it even though a few others who rode the Coaster just fine have tried. The best decision I made this summer was to ditch the H/L landlocked and get the Coaster. I choose the 5’0” XR knowing it may be the only surf board on the boat for me and my sons at times depending on guests. If I had more board racks on the boat I may have gone with the normal 5’3” Coaster.

Thanks for sharing. I rarely have light weight riders in my boat. I'm trying to get my 11yo out there, but he's a 50lb featherweight. So it's nice to get the feedback.

I have had great success teaching feather weights to wakeboard. Wake-surfing will certainly require a shorter board with less buoyancy. Both will require a bit less throttle from starts. Getting young kids in proper form before they learn bad habits is far easier than adults. My 11 year old nephew spent most of the summer with us and had a much easier time wake-boarding. I learned a lot about proper form from world pros earlier this summer (very humbling experience for me as I was doing it all wrong) which translated in him being very good in far less time than my own kids as I was able to teach him far better having proper knowledge. All that to say technique and the right board in combination make a giant difference. Get him out there having fun with proper instruction and he will be putting you to shame in no time.
