Family and I were headed to the lake Saturday to enjoy a beautiful 80* day, and then.... Boom!

Engine light flashed a couple times, power dropped and then she blew.

Found a couple pieces of metal on the side of the interstate including a piece of the connecting rod.

Truck is a 2014 F150 Supercrew FX4 with 73K miles.

Anyone else heard of issues with this motor?

TowBoat paid for itself as they pulled truck and boat to the dealership.

Tried to buy another truck that evening so we could go out on Sunday, but dealer wouldn't budge on price of truck (another dealer - not the one that knew I was without a truck). I figured in current economic situation they would be hungrier, but I guess they're getting stimulus money.

Crawled under it this morning and could not see where it blew, but found another piece of metal wedged in just below passenger side of motor.

Bought used with extended warranty at 36k miles.

dealer serviced.

oil changed about 1k miles ago by dealer

was running less than 70 on interstate

Motor is part of your 5/60k warranty, and your extended on a Ford warranty should bring that out to 100k. Even if it doesn't, I'd raise hell with Ford for having an engine detonate under 200k miles.

My warranty was for 6 yr / 60k miles, so I'm not stressing yet as it is well within those parameters.

I'm going back to a Tundra. I like Ford, but my previous truck was a Tundra that I drove without issue and traded in on this F150 at 200k miles.

You stated above you had 73k on it?

@TOGA had the same exact thing happen on a 2013 ecoboost at 80k miles, luckily not while towing. Saw the rod sticking out the side of the block and knew it was bad. Since truck was out of warranty, dealer was only interested in taking it as a trade on a new truck. Not sure why anyone would buy the same truck when their well-maintained engine just blew up for no good reason.

Found an independent shop through friends, owner sent a picture of 4 ecoboosts with the same issue that he was dropping crate engines in... THAT WEEK!! Said he does 10 crate engines in F150s a month...

Long story short, the turbos on these do not have post-oilers, the bearings get loose, impeller blows up, gets ingested into the engine which throws a rod about 60% of the time.

I loved the ecoboost until it self-destructed. It’s still in the family since it has a brand new engine and is completely worthless, but when I got my new truck this year, I went with GMC and a boring old v8 🤦‍♂️

Sorry to hear that. Car trouble and trip interruption is never fun.

When I had an F150 (5.0L ) I remember a lot of problems with the EcoBoost with Turbos, a few thrown rods and lots of problems running in humid climates.... which is why at the time I bought the 5.0L instead.

Have you looked at the price of a replacement engine? It will probably cost a lot less to swap the engine than to scrap the vehicle and take the depreciation hit on another one. I'm thinking $2000-$4000 for the engine plus installation.

Make me glad i got the 5.0! I had heard of some vaccuum booster issues or something similar but not this!
I know a bit of turbos and i know i am the guy that parks the truck outside, jumps in and turns the key and rolls even in winter. I would prolly have mine blown up too. The coyote is amazing in my 2016

Where are you, and what do you want for the truck?

Sorry your trip was ruined. I'd take it as is and have my buddy throw motor in it

I had a 2013 Eco Boost and loved it until I towed my son and his car back to Fort Bragg, NC [long story short]. We ran into rain and the turbos picked up rain water and shut down. I traded it almost immediately upon making it back home. Went to a GMC Sierra Denali, HATED IT! Will never buy another GM product. I now have a 2018 Ecoboost and love it! It was reengineered ( so ford told me). Pulls my boat like it’s not there. I have been a Ford guy for a while, but when I trade again I am going to look at the Ram as well.

My buddy runs shope he said the early ecoboost were horrible. 2017 and later they fixed issue.

The new rams are nice, little light on the back end, but make the ride not feel like a "truck".

My father in law has a 2500 (ram) its sick.

Dealership is working with the Extended Warranty company now. They did confirm the motor is totally shot and has to be replaced.

It will be interesting to see what your extended warranty says, whether they will pay for the work or total the car. The dealer estimated 14k for a motor swap. The ford-certified independent shop did it for just under 10. The plus side is that the new crate engine comes with a 100k Mile warranty from Ford.

yeah the old gen ecoboosts have been known to have all sorts of problems I wouldn't touch anything older than a 2017 when they did the redesign. I have a 2017 F150 FX4 eco and I won't own it outside of the 100k powertrain warranty. Once I hit 90k miles I'll be looking to dump it, likely on another F150.

In 18 the pd bought a few ford tarus police cars... 4 went to detectives and there were marked for the road. (Worst popo car in the history if popo cars!!!) The department went with the naturally aspirated by instead of the turbo for the exact reasons listed above! The depart bought these one year and now were are trying desperately to mile them out to get ride of them...

I am anti eco boost! Remember when they first came out and they said you will get v8 power and 4 cylinder mileage? Well they don't say that now... the mileage never happened. Sure u can get the by to be an absolute beast!! But to do it you are running a supped up high performance v6... for me and mine, give me a good old v8 anyday!

Sorry this happened to you and I hope for a good resolution!!
