I have an sx 192, which came with the clarion m502 head unit. Its an ok unit. The boat also came with the polk speakers which seem to be just ok.

I want to add an amp/amps and subwoofer than gives a nice deep base, what brand/model?

should I go with the amp and sub and see if my stock speakers can hang? I can always upgrade those later....

I'd go the other way. Amp for the stock speakers first. If that doesn't do it for you, upgrade the speakers. JL Audio or Wet Sounds coaxials will give you pretty good full range sound with a good amp. If you aren't satisfied with that, add the sub. I think you would be surprised how much difference an amp makes.

I could do that, it would be easier. Do you think wetsounds is the way to go? They seem a bit more expensive....

It's kind of a personal taste thing... like Ford vs Chevy. They both sound awesome though. If you can, I recommend listening to both. You may or may not like one better.

I have 3 pairs of XS650's, a XS12 sub, and the SYN-6 amp in my boat right now. I'll be upgrading before too long and will probably add a pair of XS-808's to the mid-cabin and upgrade to newer amps. Nothing against the Wet Sounds amp, but I think JL makes a better amp. Of course their amps are more $.

I just upgraded from the Polks to all wetsounds. 8 of the 6.5's plus 2 Free Air subs and 3 amps.
Agree with Bill - add the amp. If you can find a wetsounds HT-4 you could potentially run all 4 of your 6.5's from that. The HT-4 basically had a newer model just come out so you can find the HT-4 for around $200.

I suspect if you're already complaining about your sound, as soon as you add an amp for your stock's you'e going to want some bass for a fuller sound. So be prepared to add 2 amps or get a single amp that can handle both for a potential sub upgrade. Then you'll want to add a battery... then a switch, then a ACR, then higher end wire, then a tower, then tower speakers... :)

I'm already on the extra battery and switch, next is audio. I was thinking I would like to know what audio I am going to add so I can calculate the gauge of wire to use

I used all Knu... http://www.knukonceptz.com/mobile-audio/power-wire/kandy-kable/

I went bigger than probably needed because it's easier to just add an amp than add larger wire and amps in the future. I went with 1/0 from the batteries to the switch and amps power/negative distribution blocks. Then went 2 from the blocks to the amps. If you only have 1 amp you could go 2 to the batteries and amps and 4 from the blocks.

is it not advisable to get 1 amp that can do both the subwoofer and the 4 speaker? Is it better to have the separate?

And if you want to go all out on the wire check out knukoncepts kollosus flexs cable. Some would say it is overkill but it should outlast hull.

I wish everyone would pass on CCA wire (Copper Clad Aluminum). It is a horrible option. Lite weight. More heat generation. More resistance. Wastes precious power. Then terminations tend to corrode faster = more resistance = more heat = more loss = endless cycle. But I know how it is with the lure of the lower price. But in reality, you are not saving with CCA wire.

Is it better to power your sub from a different amp? Sorry for the dumb questions, I just want to get this right.

If I get the JL m600/6 to power my speakers and sub (don't have the sub yet) will I get good enough performance from that? I know that is subjective, I would just hate to spend almost 600 on an amp and wish I split it up. What are the pros and cons here?

I am going to pull the trigger on an amp for sure, still debating if I should hold off on a sub until after I hear the difference of just an amp.

Thank you, @David Analog, that is so right.

You can use one amp to run your speakers and your sub. That's what I have in my boat right now.

If you go that route, I would look at spending the extra $50 and getting the M700/5. That amp would be perfect for 4 cabin speakers and a sub.

It's no better or worse to power sub with different amp, but I can tell you this, you want a quality amp over quantity. The recommendation for 700/5 is a good one...I was only sharing my experience with friend's 6 channel. JL is quality amp.
