Another audio upgrade thread.....

JL M6 6.5 reproduce amazing full sound and bass. powered of course. and fit with no cutting in the stock 5" wetsound holes. Pair them with subs, amazing sound, again all about the amp. The IB subs dont need room behind them as they use the free air from the hull area.

Subs need space, but not necessarily directly behind them. Free Air (IB) subs can be mounted almost anywhere in the hull and work great. I ran 2 JL IB 10s on the port side next to the passenger captain chair area.

Decent price on the speakers. Full retail on the M800 isn't good. $400 for parts is close to double what it should be. $600 labor within reason.

Plenty of other competitors in the market that have just as good products.

Mid-bass* - The M6s are limited to 55hz at its lowest point. Still shouldn't be played that low though. You will lose the impact from kick drums and bass guitars. Rap music and EDM? You lose half the range lol.

To offer another opinion here - you couldn't pay me to have a sub for my music system. Full range music speakers only for me. Home theater is another story...

Where did you end up putting the 2 new speakers. What location. I want to add two one by captain chair one by co captain but not sure on location. I would hate to cut a hole in my boat and then not have space. I have a ar240

My boat is at the canvas place right now getting new snap-in covers and will be going to the audio guy on Friday so they are not installed yet. Me and the tech are gonna look at where the JL 7.7’s will fit - I’d like to get them up as high as possible in the helm area.

I’ll snap a few photos and post them Friday night.

That would be great. Thanks

not my pic but mine are here.....

Thank you very much.

I can get you measurements tomorrow if not raining. You have to mount them high due to not much depth. They are right at rub rail height some mount them behind the grab handle but sound is directional and in font of you is better.

I currently have 8 - 6.5 Wetsounds and a 8.0" sub and 10.0" sub and used a Rockville 8 channel Amp for 6.5's for the past 3 years with no issues. Running a Rockville 2 channel for the subs.

Rockville is on the bargain side of price, but to be honest after receiving the amp, looking at the construction and playing the crap out of the thing, cannot justify a new high dollar amp. I thought If I can get a season out of it, will buy a name brand JL or Wet sounds Amp, no need in my case.
This amp sells for under $200.0 . Rockvilleaudio.com

So I decided to bite the bullet and get a sub as well - final setup will look like this:

  • Three pair JL M650 - 1 pair bow, 1 pair stern, 1 pair swim deck
  • One pair JL M770 - helm area
  • JL M10IB5 10” subwoofer - cut into port side battery compartment facing towards starboard side.
  • JL M700/5 (5 channel, 700 watts) amp - feeding two pair of M650 speakers and subwoofer
  • Wet Sounds HTX-4 (4 channel, 600watts) amp - feeding one pair of M650 speakers and one pair of M770 speakers

Work will be done on Friday and I pick it up on Saturday. Very excited to hear the system!!!

I'm pretty happy with the stock setup on my 212SE. It cranks pretty good. Was out on the lake today and my XMSirius satellite radio worked great. I found that with Bluetooth the sound is much better. Too bad I can't adjust the bass. Still trying to figure out the zone operations. All I was able to do was turn off the swim platform speakers. It sounds great, but at this point the concept is pretty lame. WTF Yamaha? Not sure this old man needs anything more than a sub.

Amps and sub are in, speakers are in progress.

Audio installer appears to have cut through the wire that runs from the helm to the remote on the swim deck when installing the 7.7’s. Had to order a new cable......... :-(

Which head unit do you have? Seems odd that you can't adjust the bass.

The Clarion on my AR190 has bass adjustments along with several different EQ settings. I didn't know how to adjust until I downloaded the manual.

Enovation. It's built into the Connext screen. No balance, fade, treble, or bass. Only zone on/off. Stupid setup, but I'm stuck with it. 2021 212SE

I think you’ll want a sub. Not to rattle the shoreline, but to fill in the music. In my little baby 19 footer I kept the stock Clarion m502 head unit and four in boat Polk db651’s. Added a four channel MTX marine amp to drive those, and a two channel MTX amp to drive a Polk DVC 10” sub in a sealed enclosure. Sounded really good. I then picked up a pair of Polk db651 tower speakers that were stock off a 242x and put them on the rear channel of the four channel amp(moved all four in tub speakers to the front channel.) I did this fully expecting to upgrade amps, but was pleasantly surprised how good it sounds. Not rock the entire cove like some of the big boy systems, but I can definitely drown out the terrible country music a few boats over if need be. All in, with adding a second battery and all wiring, I’m definitely well under a $1000 on my audio upgrade.
Where did you put your sub? Just added a sub Wednesday to our 195.
