Are JL amps worth it? / Options for non-IB subs

Our boat came with a wetsounds core 10 sound bar. I added 2 rev 10's to the tower to replace the DB651's that came factory with the boat.

I did turn the sound bar around so it faces forward and fills the front with music better.
Sweet. I thought about getting one but with the design of my boat and the way the bimini is, I would have to hang it upside down (compare with yours). We'd be banging into it.

LOL I pointed my tower speakers to the front (so I can hear them).

i dont buy Marine amp i buy regular jl amps same thing just cheaper, the only difference is the marine has a coating, not water resistant, mine are going on 5 years, i got rid of the stock wetsound amp that came on the boat

No problems with the amps in the salt?

Another vote for JL! How are your MM651's doing in the salt? Are you happy with the sound quality or do you think JL MX's are in the future?
Love the crisp and clean sound of the Polks, so far no complaints as for corrosion only time will tell. I give them a 2 thumbs up, I don’t see any near future swaps. One happy camper.??

I just installed the MM652s and they sound excellent, much louder than the db651's while maintaining clarity and tone. The MM's are constructed with a fiber composite basket, they won't be able to rust on you like the db651's... You should really take a good look at them, performance to price is there.

That's good to hear. I had my DB651s out a week or two ago, and I was not impressed by some early signs of corrosion considering the boat only has 60 hours, most of which have been in freshwater. I'm not quite committed to buying 4 pairs of JL or WS.

Good points are being made on both sides of the JL/Polk fence...

Can anyone speak to the amount of bass the JL MX650's make? Wondering if the IB profile of the MX650's will help enough in the low end to not warrant a sub right off the back (sub combo is about $300, that would make up the need with the MM652's)

any water will damage the amp marine or not, i live in Florida used mine in the west coast east and all the way down in miami, never an issue unless they w=get wet, then its game over

Looking at upgrading the stereo in my SX190, I know that I will be going with a Fusion MS-RA70 for the headunit but am now stuck trying to pick speakers and amp. I started looking at JL MX650's but the price of the JL M700/5 amp is killing me, over $600 for not even the full power that the 650's can handle? If I am going to be dropping $200+/pair on speakers I want them to be driven right and get the most power out of them as possible. Has anyone powered JL's with something other then a JL amp? or should I just "buy once, cry once" and go for it?

The sub is another question, I don't want to drill into the boat to add a sub so the IB subs from JL are out, any good alternatives selections appreciated.

Thanks
Call Creative Audio. Don't just look on web site. You can get MX650's for $175 a pair. I just put 4 of those with the MX770 towers speakers and the JL M700/5 on my AR210 with the JL 10"IB sub!! Man it sounds phenomenal.

Again, call them and ask did best prices. They have phenomenal service and prices!

Thanks for the tip! How much did you pay for the 770's and amp? (if you don't mind me asking).

Sorry you probably have a stereo installed by now. Haven’t been on for weeks. $500 for amp and bought 770’s used from a fellow jetboatpilot member.

Yep, put the finishing touches on everything today, but I did give Creative a call and they worked a smoking deal on the whole system. Ended up with MX 770's, MX650's, 10IB Sub and M600/6 Amp.

And?? I’m sure you were amazed? I was overly impressed with mine. Worth the money!!

Yep, on first play they blew me away. Awesome setup, worth it but I am still needed to do some tuning. Not sure if I am getting the full power out of the sub and speakers but that will be for next weekend.

Nice system! I'm still in the equipment search mode...still not convinced the JL juice is worth the squeeze for my fresh water needs. Still leaning towards Kicker. Man, that 190 is goin' to be rockin'! Will be listening for you out on Havasu!

Are you guys happy with just the single 10” sub? Where is the sub mounted? If in the cockpit, how is the bass up in the bow?

I’m trying to decide on 1 vs 2 10s for our new boat....

TY!!!

Assuming you like bass, go with 2 subs. One is nice but due to location and direction it'd be pointing in go with 2. I got one and it's just not enough.

The jury is still out on the sub for me. I have yet to really tune it but so far not too much of an improvement compared to running the 770's wide open. If you want low end then go for 2, or step up to M12's

I am very happy with just the one sub. My installer put it directly behind driver's seat facing the seat without hesitation. I have seen others put behind drivers seat facing the port side. He said he preferred it facing the back of the seat. In the bow you don't really get the bass affect, so, if I was thinking of 2, one up there would make sense. I am rarely up there. Hope this helps.
