Bell housing needed?

Hey everyone,
I am going to be putting the sbc 350 back into my boat. Really looking to leave the bell housing off. I’ve posted a few pics. One shows the type of housing and the other shows the boat itself. As you can see, it’s a closed motor. Not sure why the housing is needed. Any advice is appreciated.
