Calling all TV Geeks

Ymmv with pre published settings. If you really want to dial it in, get it calibrated. It should take about 4 hours for a good tech to do with with software and a meter.

@mark_m Curious, what does calibration typically cost? Do you find it worth it?

I used hdtvbtchadb.com I think it’s totally worth it. The cost depends on the type of display you have. Will post follow up with the calibration results when I get home tonight so you can see.

Here are the before and after calibration datapoints for my tv. Some panels are better than others and can be calibrated to reference levels. I believe any panel/tv will look better when dialed in. Colors are much more natural; I would / will do again when getting a tv.

Thanks
Mark

I think I gave $375? I cannot remember. Chad was at my house for about 6 hours to calibrate the LH90. I had him come back to do two more panels the following year and I think I gave him around 450, but the second panel was a quicker process as the panel did not give him all of the advanced setting features required to fully calibrate the tv.

I think calibration is ~$150 from Best Buy. I know my area has a bit of wait because they only have one certified tech to do the job. It's on my list of things, but pretty far down there. They had a service called Total Tech that makes a lot services cheaper, so the calibration is now only $50. (Really not sure why I don't just spend the money, guess I am cheap lol)

I bought a sharp 70 inch in Dec 2012 this thing is awesome. I get comps all the time. don't remember the mod tho. from BB it was like 2000 back then

Let me chime in as a person who has made his living at making movies. Go to sports bars, go to where you can watch sports on a screen and let YOUR eye decide. I use a Epson projector at 1080 which is plenty resolution for me projected on the wall at 12 feet by 5 feet, but I’m a movie guy, not much sports at all. Just remember what you buy today will be obsolete in a year! You can not keep up with tech unless you have an endless budget. Also remember that many people never even take the time to adjust the picture, so you can also get a decent look by playing around with controls. As far as brands, this is Epson is the best color and contrast I’ve ever seen from a projector and I’ve had many over the years. In my editing bay I have a Samsung which I live because of the blacks and good contrast ratio. Good luck with your purchase!
