How to get a set of spare keys for cheap

There is a locksmith that I have used that can take a blank and a file, listen to the tumblers as he inserts the blank into the switch and cut the key with the file way quicker than him using his machine..he did it for my second set for another craft we own!
I now realize I need to get the second set for our 230. Thanks for this post!
Who is your locksmith as good ones are hard to find around here?

At ace now. Any one know the key code for a 2005 230

@tocelli , He is located in Morehead about a couple miles out of town.

Very helpful and courteous. Not to mention quick at making keys lol..

It's easy to pop out either ignition switch to bring it to a locksmith if you're in doubt about the key code or you lost your keys.

The dealer wanted $13.50 for a precut key and since I wanted 4 of them in addition to the 2 I already had (set for starting the boat, set hidden in the boat, set in the truck), I would have had to cough up $54 for four small keys. I went to a big box store and they couldn't make one. Then I went to a local locksmith and he made me 4 keys for $12. My locksmith had the correct type of blanks. Here is what he used.

The YH52 key blank is just a bit longer than my original factory keys, but they work just fine. Since they are backups it's a non issue for me.

I read on a different forum that Ace hardware carries a key that matches more closely in length. It is the SS4

One thing I will mention, and everyone should do this, is to write down the 3 digit key code on your keys, so that if you ever loose your original set you know that you can reorder them. Sometimes you can find originals on ebay for pretty cheap (mine wasn't available on ebay). Without that key code, you will have to call mother Yamaha with your Hull number or possibly a number off the engine to get the key number.

Here are some pictures of my YH52 spare keys.

Will this blank work for the SX210, Key code 831? Thanks

Gus,
Do you have a current key to compare against the chart on page 1 ?

I think at some point (2010-2013??) Yamaha changed the number of levels on the keys. A longer shoulder doesn't matter.

I read on another forum that DA25 X123 should work. My local hardware store man had his doubts, but it worked on my 2015 242 limited s

I just had a locksmith make me some spares. He used yahmaha motorcycle keys (ilco x112 ym56). He ground down the tip to the same length and then cut the edges.

I read on Yamaha jet boaters (another forum)

Glad to have you on board, be sure if your posting on YJB you don't mention "I read on Jetboaters.net" because they will ban you (there's some bad history there:winkingthumbsup")

I really need to get around to trying this out. lol

Parts dept at my local marina had spares for both my boats (242 L-S & AR230HO) just show them your original key and they match that number with a new one! Simple as that! I believe they were $12.95 each.

FYI - The engine keys are able to be ordered on Amazon. No luck on glove box key online, but another thread has a number I may call to get a backup.

Hello I lost my keys 255 FHS Sport someone knows what is the code key

Your supposed to take the key out of the ignition? Been boating for 55 years. Key stays in the boat. But I don't leave it unattended

Actually the 3 digit ignition code is also on the ignition if you ever loose your keys you can just pull that out and get another set made.......ask me how I know.
You can order them for a few bucks
from a few online
places with that code.
