Hi guys,
I'm just placed a deposit on a 2018 242XE. The broker asked if I'd like names of some local surveyors. What is the general consensus on the need for a professional survey on a Yamaha boat? I know that with large cruisers it is generally regarded as absolutely necessary, but have little experience with the buying process of (albeit larger) jet boats. All opinions welcome.
 
It will be up to you and your insurance provider. We have had our bigger, older sailboats surveyed. Smaller boats with fewer systems are typically not surveyed if the buyer knows what to look for. A seatrial is a must. Running up and down the throttle range to see how the boat responds. On a 242, check out the washdown system. Check for water ingress before and after the seatrial. Make sure all the electronics function properly. Check the hull for dings and scratch damage and look for any big spider cracks along the topside or the hull. Surveys are not cheap. And they don't always catch everything.
 
Here is something I put together when I bought a 210FSH.
Not everything will apply to a 242XE.
That’s a great list, and should be made a sticky! Is it easy to format to print only one page wide? The second column w/ the procedure printed out on pages 4-8.

@dalcini - If you feel comfortable with looking over the hull/hatches/gauges, doing a sea trial and verifying how the boat runs, hole shot, etc., it might give you peace of mind if you were able to have a mechanic who works on Waverunners use the YDS software to scan both engines, validate the compression, and provide feedback on the condition of the pumps/impellers.
