Hello forum.. I was wondering what the community thinks about outdoor storage. I'm a newbie to boating and have a new 2020 AR190 stored in my driveway and it's beginning to heat up out here in SoCal 100F degrees +. I do have a premium yammy cover on it and I do understand that boats/ cars are built to stand aggressive heat but over time UV rays can kill the look of any boat. Can you guys provide any tips or products that would assist with longevity in hot weather conditions??IMG_0206.jpg

Carport?
Seriously the direct uv is going to cause fade. Keep a good coat of wax on it.
Second, keep a fan running under the tarp to help recirculate the hot air for slightly less hot air.
Do not let the cover touch the vinyl.

That doesn’t look like a neighborhood where you’d be able to park like that.

If you could get away with it one of those framed shade tarp things would be best.
If you can’t do that maybe you could get away with a bigger, light colored cover that covers more of the hull.

I just throw some cheap shade sails over mine and it lowers the temp inside the premium cover substantially. Pretty ugly though & I couldn’t get away with it out front.

From one so cal resident to another... find an indoor storage unit with an electrical hook up to preserve your new boat and keep your batteries topped off. If you are boating out at the River there are plenty of cheap indoor storage units in that area. I have mine at a giant air conditioned Warehouse with million dollar RVs called Big Toy Depot in Chula Vista. Protect your investment.

If you do decide to keep it outdoors, look into getting it ceramically coated.

lol...yeah.... I may be pissing off some neighbors but no HOA's here and others on my block have toys in the driveway, RV's and Jet Ski's, but I'm the only one with a boat. Only compliments from neighbors so far...but we will see. As far as an additional tarp is concerned, I'd really be pushing it with the neighbors then ...haha :). I'll try an let down the tower and park in the garage during the off season, but during the summer we've been going out 2-3x per month since we got it so collapsing that tower so often may not be ideal.

I drop the tower in my 242 LSE after every weekend to put it under cover. If you can fit it in the garage, I’d do that in a heartbeat.

Not to hijack, but how well does that stuff work? Do you have to clean the hull much at all between outings?

Tower is super easy to take down and put up. Less than a minute. Trick is to grab the front tube and lean a lot of body weight/muscle toward the stern to take the pressure off the screws. When unscrewing the second one you have to use that weight as a counter balance to keep the tower from slamming down and causing damage.

I’m a bigger semi fit guy, I do it by myself every week. If you have a bad back/older/medical issues I would recommend having a second person help, super simple but it’s got some weight. First couple times I did it I was I didn’t have a good technique yet and my back was not to happy.

My 240 sits on the side of my house in Florida, no way it’s fitting the garage, I got a generic light colored cover that covers a bit more of the sides, I also run a extension cord to the boat for a box fan under the cover, more so to dry the boat out and discourage critters from getting in, but I guess it also helps with the heat. Couple birds with one stone as I have a 2 bank battery charger/tender hooked up as well.

Central WI here ... Have a 2017 AR195. We may not get quite that hot here in the northwoods, but we do get humid. Our hottest part of the summer will reach mid-90's for a couple weeks (with 90% humidty - ugh!). Regardless, I'm going on my 4th summer having my boat parked in my driveway exactly the way you have it. The cover has faded a tad, but I feel that's expected after 4 years. Otherwise no issues.

After 4 years and no issues , WOW! Does it rain a lot there too? My concern about the tower is because of advice from the dealer. When I mentioned I would try and put it in my garage he responded that excessive collapsing of the tower would make it less sturdy over time and to be careful. I'd like to hear from someone who's been collapsing the tower and garaging regularly for a few years. Is this true? Did you have to mod the tower to get it low enough to fit? I have a standard 7' high entry. Is there a specific forum post that explains the best method to mod the tower correctly for garaging?

Here in Riverside Co. California, during the summer around this time between mid July and early Sept, 100F+ heat events last about 3-4 days at a time then back down to a frigid 85-90F for a few more weeks which is normal for this time of year. This 3-4 day extreme heat cycle happens about 2-3x during the summer which is cause enough for me to be concerned about my boat fading. Yesterday it climbed to 107F and today is supposed to hit 110. The event is supposed to last until Sat-Sun.

I extended the tower cables a bit per another thread here on the forum. So I can mine in the garage if I ever really need to. But my tower only goes up/down twice a year .... when I pull it out of winter storage and when it goes back in. Otherwise it is parked in the driveway with the cover on and the tower up.

It is different for everyone, but I like the sun sails. They are advertised as being 95% UV resistant. I quit using the factory cover except for long hauls. I do not mind the boat getting wet from rain because the sun sails allow air movement and it dries up almost immediately. I used to have a lot of mold stains on the upholstery. That is gone However, I remove most of the unbolted seat cushions and store them inside. I also remove the Bimini frame and canopy and keep it inside also. Above the storage areas, where the seat cushions have been removed, I place opening-shaped membrane-covered pieces of plywood. Boat cover

Heavy, steady, direct SoCal sunlight UV will destroy your vinyl and punish your gelcoat faster than you think. Your cover is a good start to protect your interior and the top of your boat, but your hull is still completely unprotected. Indoor storage is best option, but it does come at a cost.

Suggest you look into something like boat skirts: Boat Skirts | iBoats

My AR190 has been sitting in my driveway untouched for over a month roasting. I hope the $900 Yamaha premium cover can withstand some sun and heat. image.jpg
