I'd go welded, but i have a few welders . Looks like it would work.

I prefer welding, my wife works at a company that does massive weldment fabrications, I after hours these guys all the time !!
 
My neighbor with a Boston whaler has the same coupler on his trailer. I wish that is how MFI built their trailers. The Fulton definitely looks thicker and stronger. With eight bolts per side (top and bottom) I would not be concerned that it is not welded in place.
