Ok, so I'm being offered 2 additional years plus the factory 1 for the warranty (boat show incentive). My dealer is selling the 4th & 5th year for $1,300. Is this extra warranty needed? Is this a good price? Thanks for your input!

That's a personal choice. I am not a fan of extended warranties. Something just never feels right about paying upfront for a product failure that may never occur.

That is a tough one. I think it depends a bit if you do your own service work, how handy you are, and how far of a drive is the dealer.

There will be small stuff missing, braking, and leaking -- no doubt. It is a boat. But as far as serious mechanical problems, the only know issue is the timing chain failure, that is in the early 2015 and before models only, and Yamaha will fix it or give you a new engine - warranty or not.

There are some hull/fittings quirks that frankly I would not want anyone else to do but myslef.
Just my 0.02.

And yes, I bought extended warranty, 4 years of YES. So there you go, LOL.

Thanks guys. One of the biggest reasons I'm going with Yamaha is the reputation of the motors. I know warranty is like insurance, I'm just not sure if this is an average price or not. I saw some previous threads with warranty prices mentioned, so I was assuming the price would be cheaper. I'm not a mechanic, but I do change oil, etc. plus YouTube teaches me a lot I've always been told this is where dealers make their money. So is it a gimmick? I don't know. I have a week to decide. Thanks again!

I was quoted $800 a year for anything over the standard factory.
I would say with a new boat, it is probably a justifiable expense. But you are already getting 2 extra years for free, right? $1,300 for two additional years does not sound like a gimmick.
That is a tough one.

@swatski, warranty or not? Are you sure? I've been kind of sweating this one, so I really hope you are right. No failure yet, but............

I am not sure about Yamaha, but with my GM Vehicles I wait until the factory bumper to bumper warranty is about to expire, then I purchase a GMPP Warranty, no sense in paying for a warranty on top of an initial warranty. Check with the dealer to see if that is an option.

Can you elaborate on GMPP? Per my dealer, who I trust (St. Charles Boat & Motor, MO) they would not extend an existing warranty. We are talking about Yamaha "YES", which I think is very desirable as you can go to any dealer.

GMPP = GM Protection Plan, it is the extended warranty you can buy for GM Vehicles. On the Corvette Forum we have dealers on there that will sell the extended warranties at a huge discount before the factory warranty runs out.

I never buy extended warranties on Yamaha Products, I have owned numerous dirt bikes, street bikes, quads, generators, side by sides, and boats for the last 25 years. I have never had any issues with any Yamaha product I have ever owned except for routine maintenance. I have always said that Yamaha is one of the best engine builders on the planet and their engineering for the most part is top notch.

I was referring specifically to the TIMING CHAIN issue in early 2015s and before 1.8s. THAT you will get fixed whether or not you have active warranty going. They will either swap parts or give you a new engine, no questions asked. Of course you will be out of your boat use for half a season, too.

I would agree with that, and I, too, never buy extended warranties as a rule.

My other rule has always been, for years, to never, ever (ever) buy a new boat.

LOL. That is until I broke both rules last year. And then - it got mentally tricky for me - I think I got the 2 year YES for free plus another 2 as a part of the deal. Really hard to tell how much you pay for what at the end...

So - there you go - I broke two rules in one seating. I'm sure there will be buyer's remorse..., but so far - surprisingly none.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I still totally believe that buying a new boat is just plain crazy and generally BAD/AWFUL financial decision. But, I did it anyway and have at least half a dozen justifications handy (if anyone needs one), LOL.

Lol, our first 2006 Yamaha SX230 we bought new, our current 2008 SX230HO we bought gently used, had 60 something hours on it and it was a recession holdover, was not sold new until I believe 2012, we saved a fortune buying a very nice low hour boat. Last year we spent over 200K buying the two Duramax 2500 HD's and the Corvette Z06, fortunately the Chevrolet Dealership is a customer of mine, I have been buying vehicles from them for over 20 years, I get things way below invoice into their holdback. Our goal with these trucks is they should last us 20 years easily and will still be worth something as diesels hold their value extremely well, same with the Corvette. We all have our justifications Lol, in reality we like to enjoy the finer things in life, we make great money, we are finally empty nesters, so we are spending our kids inheritance!!!

When I bought my 242 Limited SE in May, they gave 3 years additional warranty, with the option to by a 4th.....I turned it down. I do believe you have up to the end of the 1 year factory warranty to purchase an extended warranty. Once your original 1 year factory warranty expires, I do not believe you are eligible, nor can you extend a warranty that you have already purchased. $1300 for 2 extra years sounds like a decent price. Sometimes you do get a better deal when you buy the extended warranty with the original purchase. As for being worth it....honestly....you wont need it for 3 years, put $1300 in a CD for three years....chances are you wont need it, or wont need all of it. I used to purchase extended warranties all the time for my cars. Only had 1 car that ever came close to paying for itself! Look at it this way....it is an insurance policy. If they thought they would lose money on it, they wouldnt be selling it for that price! Plus, in 3 years, if you have a defective product, you will know it way before the 3 year warranty runs out and you can sell it! Just my opinion!

When I bought my boat, it came with an additional three years of YES for free. I believe I had one claim on it during that time that was covered (nothing too big but something I didn't want to fix myself).

If it were me, I'd take the additional two years of YES thrown in and run. In your situation, you're basically betting that the thing will break down sometime in years 4-5 that will require >$1300 to repair.

Good points! I think I'll wait. I can easily find the $1,300 to spend elsewhere

I never buy warranties on anything but my cars and boats - just one bad service most of the time you will get your money back

I had my screen replaced because of hairline cracks for free

If you purchase a warranty upfront, the warranty company knows that the first three years are covered, and that's reflected in the price. your not paying for the first three years, so your really not double covering yourself.

If the extended warranty is for let's say 5 years or 100,000 miles, that starts from the beginning of ownership, so if the initial bumper to bumper warranty is for 3 years or 36,000 miles, you are buying an extra 2 years or 64,000 miles. There are a couple of dealers on the Corvette Forum that offer the GMPP Warranties at a great discount, roughly $ 350.00 per year for the warranty purchased, that's cheap insurance on a six figure car.

I bought 6 year bumper to bumper coverage on my 242x. I'm not a boat mechanic and this is our first boat so I wanted the peace of mind.
