Finally made it back to Lake Oahe after my first trip there two years ago. I had 5 days in a row on the water, mainly fishing but some cruising and swimming as well.

I’m still using my Dads pack boxes from his days with his donkeys from many moons ago..

The drive over super beautiful and easy… everything is still very green.

All the stock ponds are full.

I stayed at the Oahe Down Stream campground and rented one of the modern cabins, everything is in there except all food items, bedding and towels, there is also a propane bbq grill and a fire ring.

I stayed in cabin C this trip, very simple and very comfortable.

These cabins are right on the Missouri River and some great views and fishing from the back door..

As you can see from this pic, there is a boat launch about 200’ from the cabin into a very sheltered bay and access to the river below the dam. I saw a lot of people come in from the river and head straight over to the fish cleaning station. This trip I was focused on Salmon fishing so I was on the other side of the dam, the boat ramp is about a 5 min drive just on the other side of the dam.

Just out of the launch area saw these structures under the water on the down imaging screen.. they look like Alien Artifacts LOL! I think they are associated with the main discharge tubes. The salmon think they’re pretty cool!

This was typical of the down image shot of fish, I’ve never seen so many schools of fish!

I went over to Lynn’s Dakota Mart the day before I started fishing and got kitted up with the lure of choice..

I fished all day Sunday trolling at 1.8 mph and nothing. I went over by the dam in the after noon and casted some cranks and caught some smallish small mouth bass for fun. The next morning as I was getting ready my friend Dobber and his friend Joe from Rapid stopped by, we both didn’t know the other was coming to Oahe so we ended up fishing together for the next couple of days, Dobber and Joe on his Ranger fisherman and me on my 210 FSH. Dobber caught this nice 9# 5 mins after putting in. Joe and Dobber are 64 and have been friends since they were 8… how cool is that? What a couple of hellians they were when they were younger! LOL! Meeting up with Dobber was fortuitous as I learned that I needed to be trolling at 2.5 mph! My trolling motor alone won’t pull my boat along for very long at that speed so I used the engines to provide the majority of thrust while the trolling motor had just enough to provide navigational duties.

Conditions were spectacular for the the first three days I was on the water..

On Tuesday some smoke blew in from the Great White North..

While Dobber and Joe trailered up to Cow Creek, I cruised the boat up there and met them by the “combine” that is up on the bluffs over looking the lake, I checked out Spring Creek Marina as it is the one place you can get fuel on the water on the south end of the lake. This was about a 50 mile round trip and I got some good mpg data, with full fuel and my extra 22 gallon tank I was getting right at 2.7-2.8 mpg with glassy water and no wind. The water temp was 78* and was perfect for swimming, on the way back I stopped mid lake and just hung onto the re boarding ladder for a hour and checked out the views.. no one around for miles. I did see a few boats on the way up but not many.

I had wanted to make a run up to Mobridge which is 117 miles approximately to the north, the weather would have been perfect for it on Tuesday but I hung out with Dobber and Joe fishing. That would have been roughly 9.5 hours without stops. Next time..

On Wednesday S/E winds were forecast to be 20mph gusting to 32mph, but they would be coming straight at the dam and we would be on the lee side so waves would be minimal. As it turned out, Wednesday would be the best day fishing and was the only day I’d catch any Salmon.

This was the first Salmon I‘ve caught in my adult life! It was a 9# fish and fought great! I caught it just after putting in, probably 5 mins into the day and was using a flasher like the one pictured above but the flashier was green and the squid was pink. Man, I wish my Dad and Mom could have been there..

A few hours later I wasn’t having any further success so I put on a yellow 2 & 1/4 ounce daredevil spoon as I had tried other colors the previous days. I caught these two just a few mins apart on the same yellow daredevil lure, but nothing after these two, I trolled the same area for a while with no further success. The wind had come up quite a bit by the late afternoon with 3’ rollers as you got just a short ways from the dam so I called it a day. This was a successful day and made up for three days of fishing all day with no success.

I had to be out of the cabin by 1100hrs on Thursday so I got up super early and launched in the dark so I could get in a few more hours of fishing with the hopes of adding at least two more Salmon to complete my five fish limit. I’d never launched in the dark before, let alone fished off my boat when it was dark. But the views were spectacular and the wind and totally laid down.

These were threatening but stayed to the south, they gave a great light show with numerous flashes and bolts of lighting.

Unfortunately I was not able to add anymore fish to the ice chest for the trip home, but what a fantastic trip and I learned A LOT about fishing for salmon and I’m very grateful for the three fish I did catch. This was not the time of year to be trying to catch salmon as the bite really takes off in late September and October, I’ll be heading back in a few weeks to hopefully load up on more!

Yes there is about 10# of Salmon to be smoked and cooked… I learned a lot about fishing for them, hopefully next time when fishing is more into the season I’ll be able to do better!

We had our weekly family dinner night last night to take advantage of the salmon..there were 14 of us.

I had tried to filet one of the salmon, that looked like Freddie Kruger tried to do it… so what was left of those filets got smoked by my friends son on his Traeger, these were absolutely fantastic!

A0CB0010-A693-4318-A12A-B1EF431AE2EF.jpeg

The rest of the filets were marinated and grilled, equally as fantastic. There was rice, pan fried asparagus, onions, and something else, a big salad, a few different appetizers, and three different kinds of brownies.

Okay,
Finally getting around to posting about trip #3 this last September. The first morning I had a heck of an alarm clock..

I had one really good fish right up to the boat and it spit the lure, probably a 15# salmon.

Consolation prize was dinner at Richie Z’s brick house bbq.

A9688AC1-08B6-4B00-95D3-01F60B43B8D8.jpeg

Then a trip over to Lynns’s Dakota mart for some more Salmon tackle..

I do not believe I’ve seen more shot gun shells in one place before.. everyone is getting kitted up for pheasant season and duck and goose season.

My friend and his wife came over for a few nights and we put her on the biggest fish she ever caught, an 8.5# walleye.

C59D5F84-AC31-47C9-A963-C88B6298A998.jpeg

She was a real trooper! Conditions on the first morning were not great, heavy fog with about 100 yards visibility with a heavy drizzle.. glad I brought along two thermos of coffee and some baileys for the crew! We caught that walleye in 150’ of water with a large yellow dare devil spoon. Those things just seem to catch everything!

Fueled up at Casey’s where 87 octane ethanol free was on the menu.. damn I love the mid west!

9285D4EE-74FA-481D-9F48-A8A0E1EC9E87.jpeg

Conditions were all over the board this trip, from ultra calm warm days to warm but very windy days.

Seas were rough enough I was taking Meclazine each night before bed..

Next to the walleye this pike was the biggest fish on the boat.

Got home pretty late this night after running up to Cow Creek to check out some hot spots..

Here’s a couple of vids of conditions after the wind came up, had some pretty good seas to deal with..
