Have you had a 1.8 timing chain failure, was it in warranty and how has Yamaha handled it?

How would the dealer know if you have the newer parts? Are they provided with a detailed build spec sheet or something on each boat they order and store that information somewhere?

That is crazy... My understanding is that your dealer should be able to tell exactly what parts you have. But the short answers would be no and no, to the best of my knowledge.
Wasn't the new chain & sprocket more robust? If so, popping the valve cover, shooting a picture and showing your dealers maintenance people should provide the answer.

Yes that would provide a definitive answer TTBOMK.

The way this was discussed with me, and what I understood, is that your dealer will have the exact model info that can be unequivocally interrogated with the correct parts fiche.

Ah so some kind of database they can log into, enter customer's VIN and it pulls the entire plant assembly build sheet including all components used in the engine? Seems that would be a lot of data to store for each boat ever made. I will call my dealer today and see if they can pull this info for me but to be honest I'm not going to hold my breath because it's hard enough to get them to call me back about my Bimini cover warranty claim.

Personally I would rather just pop the valve cover off and would know within 2 seconds glancing at the chain if I have the new hardware or not. I still need to do that as we really don't have quantifiable proof of when the new parts were changed at the plant. I know you said you have a source but can you elaborate a little on who or how high up he is? Hope you understand.

From what I understand the front of the engine is larger to hold the wider chain etc and this is the problem with getting my engine back because the oil pan gasket is also different, so if someone can get dimensions from the older engine and the new one to compare it should have some easily recognized difference from outside the engine, perhaps IF I ever get my ski back I can look at both and document the difference for you.
But hell I'm getting old waiting for the engine to get fixed and I am ready to start some correspondence with the consumer news crews here for some results.

Well, I have a 2016 AR 192 with a 5/15 engine build. I can only wonder if my engine has the upgraded parts or not. Between this and the heat soak issue they will not take care of, it seems their reputation for engine excellence is ill-deserved.

I spoke with the service manager at my local dealership; he's been there for about a year and hasn't seen any broken timing chains.

Thanks for the welcome Scott. I've read these links, just not sure mine has the problem. I checked the OEM parts list and the valve covers are the same part number. I can't seem to find any information on another way to tell the differences between engines. I have the dealer going through my boat today for the heat soak (yes, I know the real answer and that they won't own up), otherwise I would pull the valve/cam cover myself.

They have a boat show going on so I suspect that is also making things slow , I don't know this for sure but someone else suggested it, also I was informed my oil pan gasket was delivered to the dealership so now it's just up to them to get the thing fixed, I'm starting week 7 as of today. I'm not real comfortable driving the other one since it has the same chain as the one that hatched.

Just to keep this tread up to date. Add @RoughRider to the list of broken timing chains. @RoughRider, when they fix your motor, make sure that they put the upgraded (2016+) timing chain in, not the original 2015 one.

what the hell is this ? I was just sent this link can't read it but seems related or maybe not

My timing chain did not fail, but the tensioner did come off. The two bolts that hold it in place fell out. Please see picture. Has anyone ever had this happen, or is this a one in a million? Camshaft was broken. I understand that these are interfering engines and this would need complete rebuild. (Warranty did cover this, just curious).

Thank you Matt, so this is sort of related but a different problem that leads back to my concern about the capabilities of the mechanics that are rebuilding the engines, and fortunately it was covered, Glad for him that it was a covered item. I assume this was a mistake at the factory perhaps a piece work related issue.

@Matt J
help me understand the above picture. Is that your boat? Don't you own a 192?

He was reposting a link I was sent from the other site but I was not able to look at it so he copied it and posted the post to this thread, it is not his boat.

Ok so I called on Monday and again today they say it is being worked on and probably will be ready in the middle of next week That will put it at 2 months down time and IF it is ready it will need to be totally broken in again Oh boy.
For the record my advice on the Yamaha fx ho cruisers, forget the cruiser because the seat seam in the drivers section will come apart and Yamaha will say it is not covered they call it normal wear and tear now while mine was going to be down I figured they could cover the seat since both my seats did the same thing with about a year and a half on them I fixed one of them because I did not want my ski down for warranty work but Now I need to remove the cover and have this one fixed also then reinstall the cover and do some modifying to hopefully prevent it from happening again I have a plan as always.
