Been there, done that. It's not great, but like I said, it wouldn't work for us. I've done NC to FL and back in a day. Not fun, and not possible with an electric.

The only way your Tesla enabled you to do anything is if you put it in autopilot and dozed off which is both illegal, unsafe, stupid, and all that.

You could still do the whole "sit around for 2 hours to relax after getting gas" thing if you wanted to. Nothing about an Ice prevents you from doing this. The electric, however, is capability limited to not allow my method.

What you're missing is its not that I don't understand it, haven't done it, any of that. I'm saying it doesn't work for us. If we take a 3 day weekend to go up to NC, we can leave after work and make it to NC late. Then we have 2 days there, and a day to drive back and relax at home. If we had to split it up over 2 days... Well we would arrive just in time to turn around and leave.

It's amazing what people don't understand until they try it.
We tried the "stop whenever needed" on the way down to FL this year. I got tired of getting in and out of the car, but otherwise the extra time wasn't an issue for us. Turned a ~9.5hr drive into ~11.5hr drive. One stop was for "breakfast" somewhere in Alabama and we stopped for a good hour there at a cracker barrel. The other stops were fuel/potty/food along the way and were 15-20min each. Total towed distance was nearly 650miles, so I would assume I would have needed ~6 stops to do it an EV. I think we did it in 5 stops with the "Zero F's Given" stopping method. I wouldn't call my condition "refreshed", but I certainly wasn't "exhausted". Left the house at 2:30am, drove until we arrived ~2pm. Still had enough energy to go to the grocery store and buy supplies for the week before I crashed on the couch for a nap.

Trip home was a little more "straight through" after a week on the beach. I was sunburnt and ready to get home, as was the rest of the family. We stopped 3 times, ate in the car, and it took us just under 10hrs coming back. The ~1.5hrs of time saved was, essentially, a wash in terms of noticeable difference. We drove through the day though, leaving around 9am and arriving at home around 7pm or so.

I can totally see the premise of "arriving less strained" if you combine more frequent stops, as well as advanced driving aids. I used Auto Cruise Control while towing, but don't like my Q7's Lane Keep Assist while towing (too twitchy for my taste). If those were slightly improved (which I think Tesla, or GM's new SuperCruise tech certainly is) then the reduced effort combined with more breaks is a winning combination there. I can totally get behind that mindset. Like I said, the trip down was much more forgiving than I anticipated considering I was the only driver.

Be interesting to see how this all works out moving forward. I think if I could get to ~120mi of range with a 3.5k trailer, and EV would make sense for me as a tow vehicle. That gets my to MOST of the local lakes AND home on a single charge, with some reserve available to make a pizza stop/etc on the way home. It also makes for a reasonable distance between stops at ~2hrs of driving between stops. Recharge would need to be in the 20min range or so, maybe not to top off, but enough to make the next charger with a little reserve.

Right now......We're NOT QUITE there, but we're much closer even now, then we were when this thread was started! It's coming soon.

Who said anything about splitting it up over 2 days? 1 additional hour is going to do that? SMH

Wow I can’t believe this thread is still going!! After owning a Tesla for a few years now those of you saying it’s not for you because of long trips you probably are accurate.

If it’s the only car you can afford or your only tow vehicle don’t get it. We love our model X and have a Rivian R1S on order to replace it hopefully in the coming spring. We have a Ford F-250 and a Toyota Prius as well though and those get used on the long trip that are more then one supercharge stop and any long distance towing.

I have taken the Tesla from South Carolina to South Florida several times and honestly we hate stopping to charge more then once it just adds to much time to the trip. That being said the car for local use can’t be beat. Wife never wakes up rushed because she has to stop at the gas station and the convenience is great. We will probably always have an EV going forward as they are a blast to drive and are significantly more convenient for 97% of your driving needs but I think we are still at a point you probably need a gas car as well at least we do.

If they actually do come out with the cyber truck with 500 mile range that will be a game changer. We do have one of those on order as well and I will replace my F250 with it but only if it has the 500+ mile range promised and they hit the price point I reserved at but I’m skeptical at best they pull that off. I have a feeling it will be more like 400 mile range and be aprox 15% more then the original price I reserved at.

I’m not your typical Tesla owner as well my experience with Tesla as a company has not been the best and the main reason I bought a Tesla was the charging network. If Tesla opens the charging network to the public as they said they would this year I would recommend looking at other EV’s there are way better values out there besides Tesla and the AP self driving system at this time really isn’t that far ahead of similar features you will get on the new Kia or Hyundai EV’s being honest that you will get at a significantly better price considering EV credits and AP on the Tesla costing an extra 10k or monthly fee.

I have a feeling your experience with Tesla as a company has significantly influenced your views.

I can only speak of my experience, but adding 2 hours to a 13.5 hour drive (assumes you only stop for gas, no food, bathroom, etc...) is more than offset by the car's ability to drive you there.

Since you brought up value and range, please name another EV currently available with > 300 miles of range for less $ than the model 3 (or Y)

Also curious how many SuC stops you make between SC and south Florida and how many gas stops you would make in a comparable SUV (you can't compare it to a Prius, c'mon).

Finally, there is no additional charge for AP - you know that. If you want FSD (which doesn't add many features of value at this time) that is $10k or $199/mo.

I agree about the potential of (and scepticism about) the cybertruck and hope other manufactures catch up to Tesla. Competition is good.

Not sure why people come to this thread to make a big fuss why it’s not for them. It’s still in first adopter stage. It will be longer range and just as quick recharge as gas eventually.

For the now… IMO for short drives 4-6 hours I like a stop in between. Perfect for the Tesla. When I drive long distance like to Wisconsin from Tampa, I like to barrel through. I stop three times and my truck is perfect for that. After talking to a friend yesterday that just drove 20 hours from Ohio, the charger stops would have been perfect since they came with four kids.

I have a feeling your experience with Tesla as a company has significantly influenced your views. - Nope I'm still ordering another EV and fully aware I will still need a gas car just choosing not to order a Tesla due to poor customer service I really do hope Tesla fixes this though they have potential to be a great company this is a major hold back.

I can only speak of my experience, but adding 2 hours to a 13.5 hour drive (assumes you only stop for gas, no food, bathroom, etc...) is more than offset by the car's ability to drive you there. - Please go route me a trip that is a 13 hour drive from your current location in a gas car and show me that the Tesla estimates it will only add 2 hours because that is just highly unlikely unless you live right on an interstate and pick a location that ends on an interstate even then its a huge stretch from what you will typically experience. Real World is I'm going to Kings Island this weekend the the gas car time it is 9 hours 52 minutes the Tesla tells time with charging and not taking the optimum route because it needs to route to super chargers is 13 hours 7 minutes this is a 3 hour and 15 minute difference on a 10 hour trip the difference on 13 hour trip would be in the 4-5 hour range I will include pics below. We will take my Ford F250 it has adaptive cruise which is just about as good as the Tesla AP system since you have to still have steering input on the Tesla and the F250 wont lock me out of the feature after three times of it not reading my steering input.

Since you brought up value and range, please name another EV currently available with > 300 miles of range for less $ than the model 3 (or Y) - Currently only one available the Mustage Mach E California Route 1 Edition its at least $7000 less expensive maybe more depending on your state then the model 3 that gets over 300 miles range but thats not a fair comp the Mustang more compares to the model Y to which it is atleast $11,000 less expensive. If we compare the Standard range model 3 there are lots of options. Some will say you need the higher range but they are wrong you need a gas car if you do lots of long trips.

Also curious how many SuC stops you make between SC and south Florida and how many gas stops you would make in a comparable SUV (you can't compare it to a Prius, c'mon). - My F250 get 500 miles range so its one gas stop anywhere I would drive over 1000 miles one way I'm flying lol. The Prius gets 500 miles range as well but I know we don't want to use that as the Prius is still the cheapest car to operate on the road but they are boring as hell. See pics below on th SuC Stops on a 10 hour trip I'm doing this weekend.

Finally, there is no additional charge for AP - you know that. If you want FSD (which doesn't add many features of value at this time) that is $10k or $199/mo. Sorry you are correct I quoted that wrong was thinking FSD but said AP but Tesla AP is not much more the Adaptive Cruise as mentioned my Ford F250 has this. Most of the current EVs coming out have something similar to FSD at it current capability.

I agree about the potential of (and scepticism about) the cybertruck and hope other manufactures catch up to Tesla. Competition is good.

Tesla definitely has problems that they need to address, but we have been without a gas car for over 2 years (3 EVs) and will probably never get one again (unless it is a collectible or toy).

We have a condo in Pensacola and have driven there (from Wisconsin - right about 1000 miles) at least a half dozen times. Real world is (7) 13-25 minute stops totaling about 2.25 hours with about 13.25 hours of driving. I have over 250k miles of driving Teslas, so I know what real world is. Here's a pic, by the way (column headings that were cut off are : Beginning SoC, Ending SoC, SuC Cost, SuC Time, Drive Miles, Drive Time, Total Time).
1627955918469.png
By the way, you could make more&shorter or less&longer stops as you choose. This is just the optimum.

When I route from Myrtle Beach to Kings Island I get 1.25 hours of charging - see next pic:
1627957831205.png

We will take my Ford F250 it has adaptive cruise which is just about as good as the Tesla AP system since you have to still have steering input on the Tesla and the F250 wont lock me out of the feature after three times of it not reading my steering input. You don't have to have "steering input" you just have to keep a hand on the wheel in case something happens. If you can't rest a hand on the wheel you shouldn't be "driving." That's all it takes (as you know).

6 month lead time, but yep you found ONE. Not really comparable in performance or range and it's only RWD but it at least hits 300 miles for < $50k.

Since you've had the car for 2 years you know the Tesla navigation is WAYYY overconservative - it gets you to the next SuC with 20% of your range remaining. Totally unnecessary and slows down the trip. Again, see my pic (and real world experience) above - you should add about 1.25 hours of charging for a 600 mile trip at most.

AP is significantly more than adaptive cruise. I do not have ANY input into the drive for about 960 out of the 1000 mile trips to/from Pensacola, although I do typically rest my hand on the wheel as Tesla "requires."

I agree about the potential of (and scepticism about) the cybertruck and hope other manufactures catch up to Tesla. Competition is good.

Bro come on I’m not sure what you’re using to do the routing but do it from the car like I did and send me that pic. Other than that the routing you sent means nothing to me but made up numbers. When I use the Tesla route planner yes it comes up an hour shorter then the car as well but the car has always been more accurate on what to really expect and on every long trip I’ve done I have yet to actually hit the cars estimated time for example my trip to Cape Coral from Myrtle Beach South Carolina which is 300 miles less than your trip took 14 hours after the car said 12.5 (gas car under 10 hours) as it never charged as fast as the planner said it would. Sometimes you will get lucky and it would be close and other times some jerk off and pull up to the supercharger and plug to the same number charger you were plugged into and cut your charge rate in half or the charger just was slow for what ever other reason. Let’s still go the opposite way and just give you the benefit of the doubt so that’s four hours round-trip. I have a whole lot better things to do with my time then sit at a super charger watching netflix. Yes I understand I will stop for gas we do 10 hours once a month in a car and a truck and average stop time in the gas cars is between 20 to 40 minutes on those trips that’s it and that’s being generous we only do fast food and gas and bathroom and that’s with a 13 and 5 year old in the car. Being honest they’re the main reason we take the gas car is the opposite of what everybody always says if you got kids it makes sense the kids absolutely hate taking the Tesla on a road trip because it extends the trip they just don’t want to be in the car and just when I get to the destinations.

Yes you have to have steering input. If I just keep my hand on the wheel my car starts yelling at me and then locks me out after the third time I’ve done it usually happens in the first hour or two of any long trip. I would expect somebody with 250,000 miles of Tesla knowledge to understand this.

The Ford website says 12 to 14 weeks lead time at least that’s what it tells me for a delivery to my dealership for the California route one model I do see where it says the premium model is at a 24 week lead time though. The lead time currently on a long range model Y according to Tesla’s website is a delivery of December for a model Y not sure how that’s any different about 14 to 16 weeks.

I mean we can go back and fourth all day long on this but the absolute bottom line honest truth a Tesla is worse than gas cars with lane keep assist and adaptive cruise on any trip over one SuC. This is coming from someone who still ordered a Rivian R1S and a sondors Metacycle I’m all in on electric vehicles but till they can find a way to get 500 miles range like a gasser and recharge the 500 miles range in under 20 minutes there will still be a place for gas cars for most of us.

I will shoot you on the line taking a Tesla on a long road trip is so bad I have rented cars three times this year to not have to do it when my other gas cars where needed for work stuff.

Even the Tesla route planner tells me you trip from Wisconsin is 19 hours in a long range Model S? Something is not adding up about your story here bro I may have the wrong town in WI but it should close based on your map. This is almost a 4 hour difference between the time on Mapquest for a gas car.

As I've repeatedly mentioned, the Tesla navigation is WAYYYY too conservative.

Don't know what to tell you other than I've driven it at least 6x in the last year and pics from the route planner I use (above) are accurate. 15.5 hours.

Oh, and the torque required on the wheel for the Tesla AP is 1.1#

If resting your hand on the wheel doesn't generate that try moving it to a different spot. It works flawlessly for me.

I have the same issue with Traffic Jam Assist (essentially AP from Audi when under 40kmh) of it not liking where I put my hands. I've tried about 4-5 different locations between my two hands, and none of them seem to work well for me. The ones that work aren't comfy and the comfy ones don't keep the TJA satisfied that I'm paying adequate attention. As best as I can find is pulling my left leg up, resting my wrist on my knee, and then driving with my left hand at ~ the 3-oclock position with just enough grip that it thinks I give a crap about what it's doing.

Which leads me to another question that is brand agnostic.......Why is there a need for a hand on the wheel? Is it some sort of legislation? Does it bump you to the next class of autonomous driving? If it's going to take control of the steering, why does it need my input any longer? Especially in low speed only conditions?

Also, as a tag on, I like the "human camera" solution in GM's SuperCruise tech. It watches the drivers eyes and can tell if the drive is alert or not. Completely passive system. Be interesting to see how it reacts with things like polarized glasses, or people with prosthetic eyes, and other edge cases.

*edit* Found a neat marketing video on the the Traffic Jam Assist works. It won't change lanes for me, but it does distance and path control within my lane under ~35mph (40kmh).

My 840 mile trip one way, charging added 3 hrs-right from the start. Maybe more maybe less, depending on how big a hurry I was in had I taken the gas car.. It stopped us a LOT more times than normal to maximize moving tim and take advantage of the ramped up charging. Once you plug in, the SC raises power til its peak and stays there for only a short amount of time- and starts to feather off. For battery health, and to share the power amongst the units. It plots your stops including that... After I learned that bit i was less perturbed by the stopping. Really is interesting mathematics happening.

And, that extra time eventually floated away, because the experience is nice, once you embrace it. I was honestly worried about this, being that I'm a "never stop" type of bike rider.... And that was true the first 4 stops or so.... Then, I extra embraced it once I started charting the costs.

Met a lady at a charger from Florida who had condo in Colorado-she drives back and forth 3 times a year in her model x. I made a remark about the gas price sign above us($3.83 and my 50% charge cost me $4 total) she's like "I dont even look anymore, i have 200k+ on the X"

I don't think ANY Tesla owner would argue its the right car if you have to tow fast and far. But just driving, or short tow... go book a demo right meow. You'll buy one. The only reason we had the demo was because I stroked out when I saw the STUPID new car prices. Four Runner for 52k...its essentially the same car it was in 1990 with some gizmos and 1000 buttons (that I dont want)

I look forward to the Rivian. They're in Bloomington Ill where we got our Y at. I called and tried to set up an appt but they weren't doing it. Unfortunately. There's no way I shell that $ out without trying. I REALLY want to like Cybertruck. I might order it but Im not pre ordering. Ill have to hold it in my hands as well..

As I've repeatedly mentioned, the Tesla navigation is WAYYYY too conservative.

Don't know what to tell you other than I've driven it at least 6x in the last year and pics from the route planner I use (above) are accurate. 15.5 hours.

So this may sound a little strange but anybody who actually knows me on this forum will tell you this is legit.

i’m not sure of your exact starting point but if it’s close to Janesville Wisconsin which is where I’m estimating you’re talking about based on your map I still truly don’t think you can make that trip to Pensacola and 15 1/2 hours. I however am willing to put my money where my mouth is so the question is how much is your time worth. I will bet you $1000 that you cannot make that trip in 15 hours and 45 minutes I will even give you an extra 15 minutes. That’s $500 (driving up and back is two days) a day to prove me wrong and if that’s not enough I’m open to discussion on that number.

Only conditions are when that 15 hours and 45 minute clock starts it doesn’t stop no matter what except for some kind of mechanical failure I will agree that would be out of the ordinary and not fair to count. You would have to agree to let me follow behind you in a gas car to verify the time and also agree to allow me to film the event. If you don’t want to be on camera that’s no problem I will blur your face out and I will not portray you in a negative manner other then calling out the times. I will eat my humble pie if I’m wrong and pay you and shake your hand at the end and all I would expect the same when you’re wrong pay me shake my hand and will part ways.

Although you are, in effect, calling me a liar - next time I drive to PC, you're on.

Oh, and it's easier than that - I'll give you a live link on Google or Garmin to follow me remotely.

P.S. you're buying food & drinks too :)

Edited to add: by the way, you are arguing about the wrong item. You claim it takes an extra 4 hours to charge on a 600 mile drive. I say 2.5 on a 1000 mile drive. The drive speed is irrelevant when discussing ICE vs EV as you can drive fast or slow with either.

We need about 30 minutes for every 200 miles. That is our inefficient Model 3 because we put on aftermarket rims with wider tires, factory that is probably 250 miles.

Food and drinks are no issue as well. Tracking link wont work for me I need to make a video on it thats where my pay day comes on this the monetary bet is nothing. Pretty sure you said two hours "but the extra 2 hours to drive to Florida allows us to arrive WAY more refreshed to the point" yes I would take the bet as well that you are plugged into super chargers for more then 2 hours on the trip also. I really am serious about this feel free to PM me to set it up it will be fun. We can even try and schedule it around when temps will be in the 70's to give you the best shot.
