Boat Registration - where to place it on 2019 Blue 242X-E?

Boat went into storage shortly after I bought it late last year. Getting ready for spring and looking for input on best location for registration numbers (above the rub rail, below the rub rail, more forward, more back, font, color?

I want the raised 3D lettering and trying to decide what font and best location on the hull. Thanks for your input and if you would like to share a pic, that would be great.

Personally mine is below the rail, above is too intrusive. On my boat, it’s white above the rail and blue below so the silver lettering went on the blue. Doesn’t look terrible as far as registration #’s go.

I believe there are rules as to where they need to be. I put mine just below the rub rail. Helps keep it out of the sun, prevents fading.

Rules, Absolutely and I am aware but even then, there is still some wiggle room and I’m looking for suggestions and hopefully some pics. Thanks for your reply.

On these boats it looks best below the rub rail IMO. Most states require 3" letters I think. There's just not that kind of room to make it not look cluttered above the rub rail because they always split the white upper with whatever side gel color and it makes it look "busy" if you put it up there IMHO. Of course I also had the "supercharged" letters in my way which i thought of removing but even then it just isn't not enough room that I care to make it fit centered on the black portion of the gel before it went to white portion. I used a company called www.DIYlettering.com and the prices weren't bad for 3-color lettering.





I did the same on my Moomba as it also has white top section and above the rub rail would have made it look too cluttered. I used chrome letters but next time I think I'm going to do domed with the same font Masque font used on the Moomba logos....

Have you had your vessel inspected, or had anyone validate your registration as displayed meets the standards for OH and or any other state? Mainly I question if this meets the requirement to contrast with the hull color.

While there are some variances, you all have more clear requirements than most.

I would suggest going under the rail and ensure the color contrasts with the boat... What color is your boat? I've always done either white letters or black. Pretty simple/standard but keeps LEO's off me.

Also the Attorney in me says to play by the rules on this one to the clearest extent possible. Lets say you were drinking on the boat at the beach and are now going home. You're not sloshed but had a couple. You leave the beach and the DNR/Game Warden/Marine Police/LEO type individual saw you at the beach, they don't have a reason to stop you because you are operating the boat appropriately (no signs of impairment). But he can't see the registration number. So he decides to stop you for having an unregistered vessel. When he approaches, he realizes that boat is registered just that the registration doesn't "clearly contrast" with the vessel. Now, he has you stopped, he smells alcohol and claims you have glassy bloodshot eyes, slightly slurred speech, and can't pass the Field Sobriety tests. Thus now you are charged with DWI/BWI.

Fully agree. For me, there are plenty of stupid things I might do to draw attention. I don't need to add font of letter to that. So I have tried to stay very much on the 'contrasting' side...

@VaMarine I see what you’re saying, the picture doesn’t show much contrast, but the letters are bright shiny chrome, in person they’re very high contrast.

While not a full inspection, one of the lakes we boat at has a LEO posted at the dock doing safety checks on all boats going in on weekends. He walked right up to the boat, complimented us on having a good looking boat (mostly a pontoon lake), ran through the checklist, gave us a sticker, and told us to have a nice day.

Around here, the Sheriffs sit on their boats with binoculars and watch you from a distance. If they come up to you, it’s not for something like the color of your reg numbers, they already saw you drinking or doing something stupid.

Agreed, typically size of the lettering is the main issue, above or below the rail is less of an issue unless you've done something REALLY stupid and they REALLY need a reason(also depends on the level of stupidity/public safety). Since above/below the rail is an arguable offense for the stop, everything beyond that can get tossed if the stop itself is questionable... LEO's will typically need/prefer more for the stop to not get it tossed. Although, the best offense is a good defense...lawyer!

I use 3", which is the state requirement below the rail, above the rail just looks funky to me.

Anyone, or wives with, those Cameo's/Criquet vinyl/decal printers can do their own with an unlimited amount of creativity! My wife does a TON of lettering, decals, images etc. I'm amazed at what those things can do!

On my 2010 240, it was above the rub rail. Wanted it there on my 2019, but their wasn't enough color above it to put the letters there without them protruding onto the white above. Had to go with below on this boat.

Forget the lettering, what is up,with the boat being off the bow roller?!!! Yikes! That's a good way to knock a huge hole in your bow if you trailer.

Ha! Consequence of having ceramic coating applied to the hull a few weeks ago.

Since the boat was sitting for the winter I loosened the front and rear tie downs last Fall to ease stress on the hull.

Then during the coating install a few weeks ago, we jacked up one side and then the other so they could apply the coating where the bunks support the boat. During the back and forth of jacking the boat it shifted back a bit. I should have tightened the bow strap before we lifted but didn't think about it at the time. I will just take it super slow to the lake the first time this year. It's only 10 miles of back roads.
