Bought a used boat - SX230HO - The adventures of a newbie

Good read! Come on summer!!!!!

Quick update-

So I popped out the cleanout ports tray today ...

After I first got the boat I used a wet slip for couple of months. The boat sat in the water for a while.

The rubber tubes connected to that tray were completely loose. I guess I'll have to tighten up a bit but looks like not too much because the plastic they go on is quite thin.

Some water had collected on bottom of hull sort of on the side of the water boxes. (sorry if my lingo is off.. still learning). The hull appears to be cupped there for lack of better word to describe this.
There are 2 areas on each side of the rear of the boat that appear to have retained water for some reason. I sucked it out with a shop vac and put a big fan to dry things up completely. Oddly, it did appear to be a lot more on the right side of the boat.

I noticed that there are traces of water coming down the sides of the boat inside the transom. Not sure how old they are but it may mean that I would have to replace the gunwale at some point and seal/reseal all the screw holes. I hear that's a pain in the rear but might have to be done in the future. I guess a decade might have taken it's toll on the old sealant.

Are these or other locations common leak points for any of you guys? Doesn't look like anything major so I am not worried at all at this point.

Bought a new scupper to be installed soon. I'll post the info etc when I actually do it. The one there now looks ok but I am not taking a chance.

Another part which might be having a small leak issue is where the reverse gate cables go through the hull. there was water collected there as well since the hull is cupped in both locations. The clear silicone sealant is definitely not in good shape there and I can tell it's come off in certain areas possibly letting water in. It may in fact be the main culprit for the extra water. Or who knows maybe the boat took on a bit too much water at some point and it just splashed around everywhere. With the seals popping out it may be some water forced it's way out of the cleanout tubes into the transom.

The cleanout tray mounting holes on the rear deck were drilled carelessly considering the location of the tray. Very possible water is coming in from there as well. I noticed lat time I drove the boat that when stopping water from the wake actually gets almost up to that level. Also could be the loose rubber tubes that let water in.

Anyway, I will keep a close eye on this stuff before making any changes/resealing.

Also here's a photo of the seal trim job I was talking about in one of my previous posts. I think I will carry a set of scissors on the boat going forward just if seals end up swelling up and plugs can't go back in again.

And finally, does anyone have an old reverse gate cable that they have not thrown away by chance? I need that rubber "cap" that goes on to the external part (see pic not sure what you'd call it :) )

Greetings and another update from the past couple of days.

I had noticed last year on the first couple of rides that the boat does not track very well. Steering wheel was not centered and had the tendency of switching directions @ low speeds. Additionally, the boat had the tendency to move forward when it was supposed to be in neutral.

So, I took my time understanding how everything works back "there" :-)

The reverse gates -
Not only were they out of spec but also they were not in sync with each other. So I took my time and set them up by the book. I am certain that there will be need to get back there and readjust after my first water run this year but I need to see how it does first and decide what to do. Greased all points.

The steering -
This was off and out of sync as well. Straightened out the steering wheel and synced both to spec. Greased all points. They are near perfect now, according to the book. It might need some tweaks but we'll see. also need to get some plastic bushings for the steering nozzle cable attachment point. Those white plastic bushings are on their way out I'm afraid.

Thrust Vectors -
Yes, it came with them on. Whatever version was current a few years ago. They do seem slightly deformed. Not sure if there's warranty that might cover them, they might just end me fishing :-)

Pump -
Thankfully everything is great with the pump shaft, bearings, impellers and housing. Took everything apart, gave it a good clean and greased a few things.

Cheers!!

@atldude it sounds like your really diving into getting that boat ready for the spring great write. The neutral issue you mentioned is not really an issue its just one of the caveats of having a Yamaha jet boat the only true neutral on the boat is when the engines are turned off. When ever they are on the impellers are pushing forward whether in gear or not.

Yes sir! The season is right around the corner...

Got the hydroturf mats in the back removed. If I never have to do this again it'd be too soon!

Used goo gone pro something from the local hw store. Though it was going to be a 2-3 hr job ended up being about 6 from start to finish including cleaning the back of the boat with soap, then drying it all up...and running to the store a few times. Still need to wipe the area gently with some small amount of acetone before the applying the new ones just to make sure all the goo is actually gone :)

Got some blacktip mats but it's way too cold for getting them on there I think. I'll wait till we get close to 70's down here and go for it.

I'm beat up a bit :)

Leaks -

So after washing the boat last night and finishing up in the dark I thought I come out this morning and look around wipe a few areas off etc.

I used a pressure washer last night (pretty week one 1800psi) to clean up folowed the hose with a shower head and I was certain some water got in. The cleanout tray is definitely letting water in addition to the radio remote control in the back and the engine bay. Under normal conditions I think the cleanout tray and the radio controller would be the biggest culprit so I'll get a new seal and 3m 4200 to resolve those.

Other than that the back looks nice and clean!

Fuel system -

Had a productive afternoon!

I saw some cracks on the fuel sender rubber seal as I was cleaning up last year, and of course there's that gas odor once you first open the gas tank hatch so I decided to clean things up just for piece of mind and the fact that this is a 10 year old boat.

So I replaced the following, properly torqued to spec etc. Everything in that general area looks nice and clean -
F1B-67747-00-00 - fuel pump seals x2
F1C-U775E-00-00 - fuel sender seal x1
GP7-U7832-01-00 - fuel cap seal (actually bought a new cap since the old one looked ugly and gave the filler neck a good scrub with some simple green. Looks great!

I think I might have to replace the check valve.. going to do some searching tonight and hopefully find out how to check if it works. Not entirely clear on the purpose. Is it just for actual fuel not to escape or is it supposed to stop air? Right now the air appears to go through in both directions...

Additionally I finally received a replacement for the 12v plug breaker. It's a CARLING STANDARD CMB SERIES 10 AMP PUSH TO RESET BOAT SWITCH BREAKER. Many sources for this one just go to ebay and take your pick. It's about $5-something

682-82556-00-00 Renewed the worn out ignition lanyard with an OEM one from ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/320899583061 ~$10

Filled in a few snap holes with 3M 5200

F1C-U2720-00-00 - "installed" this cover that keeps the starboard cables in the hatch out of sight. Comes with the female snaps already on.

F2D-U266F-00-00 - this port side hatch seal was missing also so I got a replacement. The part number was updated at some point and it's a simple white channel seal. Probably overpaid. Had to cut it since it was longer than needed as it is now shared with later year boats that have bigger hatches. Looks nice though :)

F2D-U2280-10-00 - installed some drain plugs to replace the uglies that were on there now and were missing the caps. This part was also updated and it would appear that it doesn't fit in the engine compartment (lack of vertical space in the drain channel there) but I just cut the long part of the plugs and they fit just fine..

F1C-U3262-00-00 - this is the seal for the cleanout plugs tray and honestly I wish I didn't spend my money. Thought it was going to come with something already the shape of that opening (as pictured on parts diagram) ...and it didn't!!! ...just a friggin strip with one side sticky ... totally not cool! lol :banghead:

Well this is it for today and tomorrow it's finally time for plugs, filters, oil and squiring some grease down that rubber hose :winkingthumbsup"

Cheers!!!

Boy, you are really going through this boat good. We have the same boat by the way! Can you tell me where you got the channel seal for your port hatch? I'm assuming you're talking about the gullwing hatch. Mine are coming apart and I want to replace them. I've priced them from the Yamaha part stores and they are crazy expensive for what it is. Somewhere in the $25 range for a hatch gasket. Really!?? If yours were about that then I'll find some apoxy for rubber and try to repair them.

I'm enjoying following your thread by the way. Impressive!

Glad you brought the seal up. Had swapped the PNs by mistake. Was in a hurry and description just says "packing" lol anyway fixed it...

So thanks man it's definitely been fun working on the boat! Sometimes I feel like I like to tinker more than actually use :) or maybe I don't have as much time nowdays with kid and all. The idea though is that now he can come with me!

Did end up getting the yammy seal from babbits and yes it's a rip off (lesson learned). I can get the dimensions tomorrow if you want prolly find the same for $10 elsewhere.the boat came without it so I had no idea what to look for.

I have a request for you if you're willing to help me out since you have the same boat. Was going to order the oem folding door assembly but it's on back order so I'm back to doing it myself. Can you measure and tell me the size of the hinges? Like width and length and the distance between the center of the holes horizontal and vertical? Would greatly appreciate it if you could!

General maintenance -

Oil is now fresh! Opted in for the yamaha kit with 10w40. Changed the oil filters too.. looked like they had been there for a while :) took out a little over 2qt each engine and I eyeballed it to about 2qt each. Just touching the tip of the stick. And I'll take some extra in case they need it on the first outing. With the new air filters I don't want to overfill.

New spark plugs from the dealership near by and

Set of air filters from babbits.

Lubed and adjusted the throttle cables (1 was 1/16-th or so off from full throttle)

Cleaned up the air box. Just gave it a good wipe inside.

Put grease in the zirks for what I think is some sort of intermediate bearing compartment but not sure... point is it's full now lol was a pain in the arse and the fittings at the bottom of the rubber hose were plugged a bit so I did it twice since I didn't expect that. Used a paper clip to unplug. There was nothing in 1 and just a spit in the other.

Boat hasn't run for 3 months and fired right up and sounds great now. Didn't notice any difference in loudness without the rotted sound proofing I removed recently.

Wanned to take a moment and thank all of you guys that have ever contributed to the forum! Thank you for all the info... seriously it's awesome to have all the howtos and ideas. It helps so much!

Are you referring to the port storage compartment door that also doubles as the walkway windbreaker? I'll have to get it for you Monday afternoon since we are enjoying the big boat this weekend. I store the Yamaha at home so I can get right to it when I get home from work.

That's the one! Thank you Pearce!

My plugs have never looked that dark. How long were those in the boat?

Gives me the willies seeing those butterfly valves wide open. I am afraid I will drop something in there so I plug them with rags right away.

Hah yea not a pretty sight. There's no telling how long they have been there. Keep in mind boat was over filled with ~2qts per engine when I got it :) The oil filters looked fishy too. They were not matching and looked like one of them was quite older than the other (white oem yamaha).

Yea I know what you mean :) think I've gotten somewhat used to it over the years but I am still very careful every time. It was a quickie had to look around in there with a flashlight make sure everything looks ok and it did.

Hi Pearce!

So I've been looking around and was hoping if not too much trouble could you tell me how thick the hinge is as well? Sorry just occurred to me a bit late :)

No problem at all! I'll get to it this afternoon. She's in a garage that's not attached to the house so I need to check on her anyway. :)
