My wife and I will be moving to San Antonio in January. With that said we will be moving our boating operation from Lake Havasu/Lake Powell to Lake Travis. Looking for any info on boating in Texas, indoor storage, best places to stay at Lake Travis with a dock and overall the lay of the land.

On a side note, I'm finally taking leave and getting out of Bahrain for about a month. We will be at Lake Martinez over Labor Day weekend before heading up to Lake Powell for five days on 5 September. If you see the pole don't be a stranger =)

My son and I about to head to Canyon Lake right now. I know a little about that area but have never been up to Travis.

Are looking for storage close SA or up by the lake?
I live on the East side of SA in Schertz, my storage lot has covered spots available. There is a really nice storage place with indoor storage, if I remember correctly it was $140 a month for a 40' garage (I was looking for my camper) it's called Collosal storage in Cibolo/Schertz, it's hard to tell what town you are in here:-)

Have fun on leave!!

I'm open to SA or the Lake. I've been looking at Emerald Point Marina's dry indoor storage w/valet service @ Travis. Still don't know much about the area though. I'm willing to pay the extra $$$ for good indoor storage. I have way to many electronics on Sotally Tober to be kept outside.

Don't have any official recommendations but Lake Travis is gorgeous. Gets crazy packed on holidays like most lakes. Welcome to Texas. Enjoy!

I seem to remember @txav8r may have spent time on Travis. Maybe when he gets done polishing his new boat he can give you some tips.

Travis has been down, way down. Even with the rain is was still down last I heard but that was awhile back. It may have recovered completely but I don't know for sure. I've only been on Travis about three times and that was years ago. It's in Austin and I'm north of DFW. Welcome to Texas!

Mel you won't believe it but Travis is 4' over pool after the central Texas floods the past two years. Never thought it would ever recover. Same is true for Buchanan which was near dry!

@Sotally Tober
Travis is the best bet for your style boating. Canyon is pretty and has a reasonable party cove but nothing on the Travis scale. I don't know anything about storage near there. What base are you going to work at? If you are on the north or east side Travis is within an hour drive or so. Oh and your stripper pole will fit in great here. Everything's bigger in Texas! Welcome.

I went to Canyon today, the Fort Sam side of JBSA rec area had their ramp closed, Randolph (sunnyside) was open. The water was above some picnic tables, only saw about 4 other boats on the whole lake, water was clear. Little windy but very nice day on the water:-)

I have no info, not having had my boat out to the SA area (though I did do high school there...). But, welcome to Texas and if you get farther east, be sure to look some of us up on Lake Conroe. :)

I will be in the NSA compound at Lackland. While the peacefulness of Canyon Lake seems nice, we do crave the crowds and party atmosphere of Lake Travis. I think you hit the nail on the head with our style of boating.

How long is the commute from Lacklund to Lake Travis? Like I mentioned above, Emerald Marina dry storage caught my eye for storing the boat. Their valet service is appealing.

Funny, I was just daydreaming of the water here at work and random thought, "Isn't Sotally Tober about due to re-engage?" Then I pop on and see your messages from yesterday.

Good to see you and your wife will get back to boating soon. Thank you for your service and for making the sacrifices that it brings, it is much appreciated.

Cheers!

Lackland is on the southwest side so you are about as far from Travis as possible. I would definitely store boat at the lake based on your location. Towing through the traffic would suck. Depending on traffic you are probably 1.5-2 hrs drive to Travis.

Just about to say the same thing, my wife was assigned to Randolph, we live in Schertz. She made Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) she was reassigned to Lackland, now she drives an hour everyday to work and back.

Unless you want to keep it real close to you I'd look around the lake for storage or maybe somewhere in the middleish like New Braunfels, that way if you wanted to do something to the boat you wouldn't have such a far drive. New Braunfels is close to Canyon Lake on the way to Travis.

Our boating commute to Lake Havasu, Lake Martinez and Lake Powell ranges from 3 - 9 hours. That is towing through the California/Arizona desert. So a 2 hour drive is a breath of fresh air. We normally won't go boating for a day. It typically is a weekend event so the driving is no biggy.

Yeah this should be a breeze then!

Thanks for the reply. I haven't been on the forum lately due to "Life" in the Navy. I'm actually home on leave from the Middle East right now in Del Mar and making final preps to make our transition out to San Antonio. My wife and I only made two boating trips out during the 2016 to Lake Martinez (Lower Stretch of the Colorado River) and an Epic House Boating Trip to Lake Powell. Again this is due living over seas for the past 3 years.

This will all be changing now that I'm heading to a cozy desk job in San Antonio for the next three years. No need for any further recommendations for boating in Texas......we fully intend on planting Sotally Tober's flag smack dab in the middle of Lake Travis and bringing the West Coast Boating Scene to the Mid West. The plan is to store our boat up at Emerald Point Marina and make the 2 hour commute north to spend our weekends boating there during Spring/Summer. I know the Cali/Arizona Colorado River like the back of my hand so I will be learning the ropes in this new body of water and open to any words of wisdom.

Our official move will go down February 20th and I expect to have the boat moved up to Travis by the first or second week of March just in time for Spring.

It's impossible to miss or not hear our boat with sound system and pole so please don't be a stranger =)
