The Vaccine

Guess I am trying to understand this comment? While Covid-19 and the seasonal flu are both viruses, they are not the same virus. A vaccine for Covid-19 will not prevent the seasonal flu, like a vaccine for the seasonal flu will not prevent Covid-19. There is currently not an approved vaccine, in the U.S., that will provide protection against both.

If you truly do not understand the risks/benefits of either, then I would sincerely suggest you talk to your doctor about these different vaccines and if they make sense in your particular case.

Nope ,I know it's not the flu. It's the new flu. And what I mean by that is this isn't going away, it's here to stay. I'm not worried about catching the flu and I'm not worried about COVID.. Good thing about COVID though, there is no flu anymore. I'm not a sheep and I'm not going to run scared.. Too many lives have been ruined because of this hype. If people want to get vaccinated please do then you'll be safe right ? Oh wait, the vaccine wears off ? What? The vaccinated can catch it ? What ? You probably think that cotton mask helps too ?

@Lurch, your political reference was “(Brian Sicknick and the Russian Bounty are just two recent examples)”.

Your behavior and constant trolling are unacceptable.

85% of your posts are in this thread. I would like to see that below 50%.
@Bruce, how is this political? Commenting on news articles, corrections, and the frequency of them is political?

Lurch’s comment mentioned two political topics. I asked him to avoid political discussion then he pushed the issue. Political discussion has been prohibited on this forum since 2014.

Were those posts removed? I haven’t seen them nor can I find them. I understand that politics are prohibited here, I’m just not seeing politics in his posts.

Yes, the post with political content was removed.

These last few pages feel like middle school. The kids are having fun saying ridiculous things and the teacher is taking them serious trying to explain things. At this stage in the game when someone throws out the vaccine changing your DNA, no discussion is going to change their mind if they truly believe that or they are just having fun with you. On the other hand, I think its dangerous when people get to chose what to remove. It leads up to the ending of George Orwell's Animal Farm: "All Animals are Equal, Some are More Equal Than Others". I guess time will tell if freedom of speech can survive the chaos of social media.

Carrys on with his day...

For those who wonder. My little old lady died. Did get another one to pull through tho.

l Much like many of us in our own professions who pride ourselves in our accuracy, the same applies to MOST news outlets.
Real news died decades ago sadly. Anyone that actually does journalism these days is usually cast aside as a leper. Today’s news media is nothing more than a mouth piece for the elite and far left progressive politicians with few exceptions. The far right has their issues as well but it’s pale in comparison to the majority of news out there. They certainly don’t have pride or accuracy and I honestly don’t know how they sleep at night. In a perfect world yes they would all work to be fair and accurate but that’s not the reality we live in.

hat SC decision gave 1 state the power to enforce vaccines. It did not give the federal govt. that power.
If you actually read the decision there is one sentence that is very interesting.

“It is within the police power of a State to enact a compulsory vaccination law, and it is for the legislature, and not for the courts, to determine”

The SC was very adament in state’s rights. The interesting part is that if the SC SAID THE STATE HAS THE POWER TO ENFORCE A MANDATE, LOGIC WOULD DICTATE THAT THE STATE ALSO HAS THE POWER TO BAN VACCINE MANDATES.

Very interesting indeed. Can’t wait to hear the oral arguments in the very near future on this one.

By the way just because the SC made a decision in 1905 it is not binding on future decisions because of precedent. The SC can make any decisions that 5 Justices agree o

Interesting indeed. Especially if the state legislature enacts a law banning vaccines.

For those of you that are triggered by Fox News here is CNN take.

This whole thread is political by those standards. We all know COVID has been politicized by both sides.

That is most unfortunate and has cost lives.

Please keep the politics out of this thread.

Sorry but this is NOT like the flu shot. This changes your DNA and that is permanent and will be passed down to children and grandchildren forever..

I don't know how a single person could acquire a high school level education and come away with the impression that mRNA could change DNA.

@Beachbummer, CRISPR is being tested in humans to correct a genetic cause of blindness. CRISPR treatment inserted directly into the body for first time

However that is very early work and quite different than the mRNA and DNA segments used in the vaccines.

I follow CRISPR and similar developments closely as they could be helpful for my son but are far from systemic, whole body, usage.

Can you give us a ELI5 (explain it like I'm 5) version on how the fix sticks around? Do the "fixed" cells then reproduce the fixed version? or do you need to repeat the treatment every so often to fix the new cells? (Or maybe these cells are long living and last a lifetime without fixing again or reproducing? ) That is pretty cool!

@Beachbummer, The permanence of the repair varies between cell types but it is hopeful that it will be permanent in most future uses. For example my son needs DNA inserted into muscle cells. CRISPR tools are not yet capable of effectively inserting DNA into cells in an animal but can do so to cells in a lab. Muscle cells do not directly reproduce but are created from specialized satellite cells. CRISPR is capable of editing DNA in the cell nucleus which would be replicated in future cells by riding AAV viruses or other delivery systems. Successfuly treating both the muscle cells and satellite cells would result in immediate and lasting benefit to the person treated.

Whether corrections would be passed to offspring is more complex. Females have all their eggs at birth. Males are constantly making new sperm. So if there are future projects to provide lasting correction of genetic issues they will need to vary between sexes. Removing and editing eggs is much more within current capabilities than treating animals after birth.

There is a myriad of ethical questions regarding the use of such technology however less so where it corrects a genetic defect improving or saving lives.

This video does a good job of explaining CRISPR although it fails to differentiate between the amazing ability in cells in a lab and the currently quite limited ability inside a living animal.

Respectfully, most of this post does not make sense.

First, when we talk about a flu shot, we are talking about a seasonal flu shot. As it takes time to develop a seasonal flu vaccine, a small group of experts travels to Asia each year, and makes educated guesses as to what viral strains will likely be the most prevelant strains in the fall. They then make a cocktail of the most likely strains and that becomes our seasonal flu shot. As the viral strains change every year, we have a different seasonal flu shot every year.

Second, as the COVID-19 strain is different that the seasonal flu, one can actually catch both! Seasonal flu cases were down last year as the precautions we took to avoid the COVID-19 virus also prevented many causes of the seasonal flu as well.

Third, I hate when someone types ‘it’s just hype’. At this time there are over 711,000 fellow Americans dead. To call it hype is just bullshit.

Even with natural immunity from having the virus, there likely will be a decrease in immunity over time, especially as new variants develop.

I sincerely hope you take the time to educate yourself on the science of the virus, because your posts indicate that you do not understand the science. If you want to learn, there are experts on this thread who can help.

If the topic wasn’t so serious, I wouldn’t bat an eye to some of these ridiculous posts. Maybe they are smart people saying ‘stupid’ things to get a rise out of others. If that’s the case, they are childish and should really grow up. On the other hand, if they really believe their ridiculous posts then they are ignorant, and any education would be helpful. There is nothing shameful in being ignorant, as we all are ignorant in some areas.
