I got a call from my dealer and they said I’m good to go on my 195 fsh. Said Yamaha had to check serial numbers. Btw anybody able to direct at what’s best for start up gear forum? Thanks!
Serial numbers of the steering cable assemblies?

Start up gear forum? Do you mean how to outfit your 195 FSH? If so, try the center console forum to begin with.

I just dropped off my 222S for 10 hour maintenance yesterday. No-one mentioned the stop sale or potential issue with the steering cable. Here’s to hoping they replace mine during the maintenance. 😒

I would suggest you ask them about it specifically. Since there is a part shortage for the issue now, I would assume they would prioritize putting them in boats that they need to sell, just an assumption though.

At the very least they can check and see if your boat is one that is affected.

I think he meant of my boat with what cables it had.

That video isn't applicable to the Yamaha. Different design

So they have multiple issues with cables produced in 2022? Also, is it just cables produced in 2022? Our 22 212xe falls in the model numbers listed but our boat was delivered in the end of 2021.

Thanks everyone for their insight!

That is the crux of it. They document indicates which models and what years...... For Now.... I personally suspect it goes back further. Until actual specifics are known it is hard to determine the true scope.

I just spoke with Yamaha Customer Service. They are expecting to receive impacted VIN/IDs in the next day or 2 from Dometic. Not holding my breath but sounds promising.

So I was on my way today to go pick up my AR195 knowing about the Stop Sale from my dealer, but due to lack of communication from Yamaha, decided to go get it anyway not knowing when or what the outcome will be. I had already done the purchase last month as dealer kind enough to keep on lot until ready to bring home. I just wanted to get it home and prep it for use, until updates on possible recall and take back at that time. Well as I was driving up there this morning , my dealer called me as he was just given directions from Yamaha. I don’t have all the details, but he said they have an inspection procedure from Yamaha to conduct. If for whatever reason it fails that inspection, there is an easy fix and my dealer already had parts. So basically I turned around and plan to go back Saturday to get it and free and clear to use as it will have underwent inspection and fix if required due to this recall/stop sale, whatever it’s called. Again, I didn’t get into details and specifics, as I’ll discuss that when pick up. But sounds like easy issue other than possible hassle for some to have to get boat up to dealer shop.

Just spoke with my dealer. Said that Yamaha has provided the repair instructions and it involves installing a bracket at the end of the steering cable. They have the item number for the part that is required but as of this morning it was not yet available to order. They are hoping it will be orderable by the end of the day. It is apparently a 30 minute job to install. So, it would appear that once the part is made available at the dealer it will be a quick turn around. Let's hope!

While this issue does not affect me directly, I just got a call from the dealer that I get my parts from that the bilge blower I ordered was in, so I asked them if they knew the dope on this. The parts guy told me that as of this morning the parts are available to order from Yamaha.

So thankfully it appears that the solution is underway and that all will be driving their boats shortly!

Not to bum anyone out whom is waiting on their boat......... But, So using a bit of common sense........ Reading posts on the internet and here and talking with a dealer, I am a bit perplexed. "Not all boats of the Same Model/Year are affected. Let's assume that it is only a bracket needs to be added. But it doesn't affect all boats that are of the same Year/model. That seems a bit confusing. So some boats with certain VINS, need a bracket while other boats that are the exact same model with the exact same steering don't need one?

How can that possibly be?

Are the ones that get a bracket using it as a stop gap measure for substandard parts? Is this a duct tape type fix? If it was a bad part I could understand, but adding an additional bracket to only some seems awful odd. Is the bracket to fix a bad part without replacing the design flaw?

One would presume all boats in the same Model/year group would require the fix...... I can't really see how it could be any other way?

Am I making any sense?

So basically Dometic indicates the steering cable material quality has an issue and their solution is add a bracket? Doesn't sound cool at all. Why not replace the cable with one that is of the required quality, rather than a work around. Cost? Or does it just mitigate their exposure? Is the life expectancy going be impacted? What happens to those whom bought boats but not the extended warranty? Are they on the hook if the materials used have issues?

Personally if it was my boat, and I already replaced my Dometic made steering cables once, you can keep the bracket and I would like a new steering cable assembly that is off the appropriate quality and in proper working condition....... But that is just me.

I’m sure a legal team, bean counters, and engineers sat down and decided that a bracket would keep the existing cable working just long enough to be beyond any legal recourse if it broke.

I’m in the automotive world, we have inspect then replace recalls all the time. Check this for a serial number range, check if this trim piece is secure, check if the brake booster is cracked, only repair if there’s an issue.

We also have just replace the part recalls. No inspections needed, install new part. We have a recall to hammer a clip over the end of the brake pedal arm, apparently it could fall out. This is that exact situation.

They’ve probably narrowed the cable issue to a time frame or serial number range. Inside that you perform the update, outside you either don’t get a recall (if their part tracking is that intelligent), or you get an inspection and no repair needed.

Well, I got off the phone earlier with a friend whom is waiting on their 2023 Yamaha Boat. He indicated that he had gotten a call from his dealer that another issue with steering as arisen with the dometic steering cables and it is the second one now, with no ETA on a fix available. I also saw mention of it this evening on two Facebook groups. Can anyone confirm or know anything else about this second issue?

All the more reason Yamaha corporate should issue a bulletin disclosing;
-the nature of the problem
-how it was discovered
-what the fix is
-ETA

Thats a very simple bulletin to post, and Yamaha needs to bite the bullet and post it, post it on sites like this one and coordinate with site admin to make the thread closed for comments to avoid a dumpster fire.
