Please update how things turn out as this issue is one I am struggling with as I design a garage.
@buckbuck it took a while but finally got the door in today. It fits with about 2” to spare. I went 2” above what the door company told me & Im lucky I did or I’d have to notch the drywall for the cable drums. It’s about 4” clearance from the door to ceiling when open so I’m hoping my lights fit.

Whoops...failed on the rear door. Didn’t even think about clearance issues with it since it’s only 8’ tall but vertical lift.
Installer could have fixed it but they chose to just jam it into the f#%$ing drywall and not mention it to me.
This whole project has been a sad eye opener into the lack of pride people take in their work these days.E99D0314-52FD-47E1-B704-DB0EE2032B94.jpeg

@AZMark
So if I remember correctly you had 17 1/2" above the door to the joist. Correct?
Please explain the operator they are recommending. Are you going to fit a rail above the door? Is it a jack screw?
I would love to keep my boat in a garage with the tower up. Very jealous.

Yes about 17” once the drywall was in.
I have a jack shaft opener for it, a lift master 8900. I got it for $350 without remotes. I currently have one for a high lift door on my regular garage and it’s great, very low profile, just a little slower than a regular opener.

I had no idea you could get a residential jack shaft opener. Nice to know.

I had the doors offset from center so I can tuck the boat off in the corner during the winter. It stays on the lift during the summer, about 250’ to the north of barn.

I was actually quoted a lower price for (2) Jack Shaft openers versus traditional openers on the new Pole Barn. The GC said the Jack Shafts are more expensive but it takes less time to install, so it makes up for the added cost of the units.

Poor boat looks cold!

Can you push it sideways in there on those dollies by yourself?

My wife’s cousin owns a business with some empty space and he is nice enough to let me keep my boat in there during the winter. Free heated storage and I can go work on it whenever I want.
