For the past couple years when I change my oil and filters in the spring, I've had an issue with the port side engine. I pump the old oil out of both engines, put the new filters on, then fill with new oil. I fill to the low mark on the dipstick. After everything is buttoned up I run each engine for about 15-30 seconds, basically just to make sure they start up. I let them sit for a few minutes and then check the oil again. Starboard side is always fine, and the port is up at the full mark if not higher, so I pump some out to get it back to the low mark. Fast forward to yesterday when I had the boat out for the first time, 8 days after changing the oil and filters, I forgot to check the oil levels before I launched, so I pulled away from the ramps to a good spot to shut down and check the oil. Motors ran 3 minutes tops. Starboard side was right where it should be. When I unscrewed the cap on the port side the oil was all the way to the top, and some spilled over. After a couple minutes it went back down but still above where I had filled it to. It also seemed to be pulsing if that makes sense. The oil level slightly moving up and down as if it was a heartbeat. I also want to mention that the oil was very black as if it was old. The starboard side was still very clean.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be? This far exceeds my basic abilities when it comes to engines. Could there be an air pocket somehow like when you refill coolant in a car? Is the flow being restricted somehow? It only happens with this motor.

Forgot to mention it's a 2006 SX230 HO. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

When I changed the oil on our 07 AR230 HO, I filled the oil so you could just see the oil on the bottom of the stick in the oil sump. Once you start it, the oil will pressurize and circulate thru the motor and sump. Being a dry sump engine, the oil leaks out of the sump shortly after shutting the motor off. I always checked my oil level with the motor running or immediately after shutting it down. I also added oil, if needed, to between the marks with it running.
As far as being black, maybe not all of the old oil was taken out or you have a sticking fuel injector, washing the cylinder walls and leaking past the rings into the oil. Does your oil smell like gasoline?
The service manual talks about the oil at the bottom tip of the dipstick, upon filling. Will try to find it.

Here it is.

On land or water I check my oil according to the manual, after running it for around 5-8 minutes and then shutting it down to make sure everything is up to temp and flowing good. Always add a little at a time so you don’t overfill.

Before you changed the oil did you run the engine first then suck it out?
