Dragging the FSH to Port St Joe in a couple weeks for first taste of Saltwater. Planning to stay inshore or not far off. Looks like Redfish, Snapper and maybe Trout will be targets. Any tips? Anything else we should be after?
TIA
Randy

You should check to see if scallops are still in season (dont think they are). Redfish and Trout are around. And flounder should be on your target list if you are in the bays. Can fish for them on the bottom or gig them with a light at night. Red snapper would be off shore in deep water on submerged structure. There are smaller snapper in the bays. Tight Lines Man.

I have stayed here before. The back of their place is on the bay around dead mans island which looks like a great place to fish. They may be able to accommodate your boat with their dock.

Thanks for the reply and fishing tips!
Nice looking inn, but my travel director ( wife) has us a VRBO on the beach that has room for our dogs, in laws & kids and granddaughter. . With that crowd I will be out to sea as much as possible! :)
Cheers.

Definitely download the fishrules app if you plan on keeping anything it’s free. So many species with different rules. I think Flounder is closing soon actually. Live shrimp on a chicken rig, Fishfinder rig or popping cork are go-tos. Grey, aka mangrove, mango, Grover, snapper may be around and are a great table fish. If you can cast net, look for bait fish and use that live as well. Or just save some time and buy some live mullet along with your shrimp. If you have some heavier gear, you can drop half a blue crab, or the whole thing if it’s small, and target some monster red or black drum in deeper channels. Same gear with wire leaders and you can look to catch some sharks with big chunk bait nearshore. Always fun, but sore arms later. Need to get the free shark endorsement by watching a video through the FWS app.

Thanks! Yeah got Fishrules app. Flounder closes 10/15 so I can't go for them. I also did "return em right" online training and should receive free gear to return reef fish brought up from >50'. Looks like if you are fishing reefs that deep you must have the gear onboard. The pictures of fish with stomachs hanging out of their mouths convinced me! I'm not sure that i will be fishing that deep, but I like to be legal and prepared!.
I can (pretty well) throw a cast net so I thought I might look for live bait but if I buy it I have 5 gallon aerated bucket to get it to the boat. With only a week I'm likely to save time and buy it!
I always have a popping cork tied on here on Lake Lanier, just in case Stripers surface, they usually don't stay up long.
Cheers

Sounds like you'll be in good shape to have some fun. When I go reef fishing, we're at 70-90 feet mostly and rarely do we pull up something with barotrauma; but at least you're legal. I've got my rig from them on one of my oldest rods occupying one of my rod holders on the boat. It looks like there's a well seeded artificial reef pretty close to there. I don't get fishing reports from that area, but its either completely overfished or will be gangbusters. I'd give it a try if you get a calm day. Otherwise plenty inshore to keep you busy, just look for moving water. post up on feeder creak mouths when the tide is going out. whatever structure you can find should hold something, especially if its older structure. you should have a great time. Jealous that you're getting a whole week to fish! I'm stuck giving money to the mouse....again.

IMG_4706.pngSo there are a couple things on the chart I don’t have on my lakes. “Explosives Anchorage Area” and “Missle test limit”. What is up with those?

Here’s what I found on my own

I saw you can monitor Channel 16, if they are active they will broadcast to stay clear. From what I've read, that side of the gulf its not activated too often, affects the western side of the missile range more frequently, but you never know.
