Doing my first trailer trip with the boat for labor day. I was giving the trailer a good look over and I have a few questions (shorelandr):

1. Is there a specific type of brake fluid that I need?
2. What is this cable for?

3. These have a bit of superficial rust but seem ok. Do I need to worry?

4. When I pump grease into the bearing buddies, how much?
5. Same question for the zerk under the fender.

Thanks!

1) Regular DOT 3 Brake Fluid although you can use DOT 4 which I believe has a higher boiling point.
2) You hook it up to the hitch at the same spot as the safety chains. If the trailer gets loose it pulls and engages the brakes... Basically emergency brake cable.
3) You are fine. Spray some lubricant on them.
4) Till they push out almost all the way full, but not fully full so they can expand. (As someone mentioned 1/8" or a bit more before full")
5) Zerk under fender. I just pumped a decent amount into mine and called it good.

You da man. Somehow I figured you would know all of this given your upcoming trip. When you say lubricant, anything in particular?

Not really. I am going to coat mine with Fluid Film this evening or tomorrow evening. At the very least something that will help with corrosion and lubrication.

I just did all this and sprayed my springs down with silicone. Be careful not to get overspray on your brake rotors.

Maybe the fluid film will help with our squeaky trailors.

Wishful thinking! Mine creaked like hell just getting it off the jackstands.

Greasing the Zerk helped a lot, imho.

I must respectfully offer some alternative advice in the bearing buddies. Be careful about how full you make the bb’s. The grease will expand when it heats up, it’s going to find a way out, usually that is around the piston According to bb’s website, once you have got the hub full, and when the hub is cold, the piston should only be pushed out by the grease 1/8th of an inch, or as long as the piston will rock back and forth that is enough grease.

As far as the center pivot on the springhanger goes I kept pumping until grease spooged out. I re greased it again later to make sure it was indeed full of grease.

@tabbibus Maybe this goes without saying, but be sure to double-check your tire pressure before your trip, including the spare.
Yes. Thanks. I did that already

Anyone have a picture of the grease zerk under the fender?

I’ve been using YamahaShield. So far so good.

Anyone know if this grease zerk is on Shorelander trailers?

Didn't know there was a Zerk under the fender, will have to locate and fill.

I didn't know either until a recent thread. But it's clearly marked!

it is between the wheels on the underside where the springs meet.
