My neighbor bought a 2023 F-150 hybrid brand new. Amazing truck and technology. He was bragging up the 22+mpg average he gets with it. Then he hauled his 21' camper about 1600 miles on a trip. I asked him how it pulled and how the fuel economy was?

"Like a dog and about 6mpg"

Me: *laughing in 5.7 Hemi pulling a 6500 boat at 70mph at 13mpg

2023 F-150 3.5l eco boost with 3.55 gear gives me 19-20mpg and was doing 11mpg towing 252SE. Felt pretty good towing it.
2024 F-150 5.0l with 3.31 gear ratio gets 20-21 mpg. Did not tow with that one. And it was not bought for towing either.
I assume 5.0 get's better milage just because of gear ratio.
Solid truck, the only thing I do not like about them is transmission that jerks and not very smooth some times, the other issue the truck slips on wet parking lots or when you go really slow sometime. Both known issues. Did not know how annoying that slipping is.

If you’re getting 10 mpg or better its a win towing at highway speeds and your empty around town / highway is above 20 with a tow vehicle.

My TV is a 2020 F-350 CC 4x4 short bed, 6.7L diesel with 3:55 end gears which is lower than the stock 3:31. On my recent two week trip to Lake Mohave, the distance was roughly 2900 miles round trip (2400 there and back) that includes a few tow to other parts of the lake and down to havasu and back, the avg mpg for the trip was 12.9. I tow at 70 mph max, so if speed limit is above that I’m still doing 70, 65 is actually the best mpg I can get but burning a bit more fuel to save a hour on a days travel is worth it. Having said that, there was a significant portion of the drive where the wheels were doing 70 mph and the paint job was doing between 90-100mph.. seems like the head wind is which every way you are headed LOL! On a flat highway with no wind the mpg is right at 14 but gets knocked off that pretty quickly with a little head wind. The 10 speed transmission is pretty darn amazing.. rpm is always in the fat part of the power band.

All that matters at the end of the day is that you are happy with your TV and it gets you there and back reliably.

You did better than I did. Pulled my boat 3.5 hrs home with the 5.7 hemi @ 60 - 65. Barely made 11mpg. Of course I found the trailer tires were only 38psi, so I might have done better with proper inflation.

'22 Silverado 2500HD - pulled our 29' 5th wheel (about 9000 lbs total) about 6800 miles from NY to Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and back for five weeks in Feb/March. Overall, got 10.7 mpg including the non-towing side trips. I'll take that. Will go up any mountain pass without losing speed, and comes down the other side without touching the brakes. I love that exhaust brake.

Sounds like you have the Duramax with Allison transmission? That’s a great package! Does all the downhill braking happen with just the exhaust braking or does the system use wheel braking too?

On my truck, I put the trans in tow haul, the exhaust brake to automatic, set the cruise control and all I do is steer. If I start coming up on another vehicle the adaptive cruise will maintain distance by pulling back on the throttle or applying the brakes, exhaust first and wheel if necessary. On downhills the system will apply the exhaust brake and start downshifting and if necessary apply the wheel brakes. As I approach abrupt uphills I’ll manually remove the top two gears, 10 to 8 to spool things up so it doesn’t have to down shift on the hill, then add the top two gears back once I start up the hill, never slows down even when towing the Albatross-my 30’ toy hauler- which weigh up to 14,000 depending on what I’m doing. I can also put the exhaust brake to on so it comes on whenever I take my foot off the throttle and put the transmission in manual to control all 10 speeds… Just amazing tech… takes away a lot of fatigue. I sure wish my Dad was around to experience it, he’d be rowing the gear box on the pick ups we had as a kid and you could literally watch the gas gauge drop on big climbs or head winds lol! And the brakes! Four wheel disc with anti lock that works with the integrated brake controller and whatever each manufacturer calls their sway / slide control, on the fords it’s advance track. All the trucks today are just awesome.

Not to take anything away from the Ford Guys here, but,,,,, I have owned 4 Super Duties (3- Power Stroke, 1- 6.2 gasser). ALL four went down with transmission failure (2 were catastrophic). I know many have not experienced the same as I have, but just though I would toss it out there. I switched back to Chevy in 2016 and have had no issues since. Also, my 255 will be the lightest thing I tow.

2018 F150 3.5 turbo w 3.55 gears and 35” tires got 18 on the freeway. Before the bigger tires it was 20 mpg on the highway.

Towing ar210 at 65-70mph was 9-10mpg if careful. It’s hard to keep it out of the boost, and the boost is what kills the mileage. I can see how the 5.0 with the right gears would do better.

Did you change the speedo ratio when you I assume you went to bigger tires?

If you made a decent change in circumference that would effective lower your gear ratio from 3:55 to 3:31 as an example… that dramatically affects power and of course it will drop mpg down..

Yes I did the tire size change with FORscan. Agree they were not good for efficiency but they looked awesome.

Fashion has its price LOL! Hey you were smart enough to change the speedo ratio… I’ve seen so many people put on big tires and their vehicles become dogs…

Have a 2016 Ram 2500 Cummins, deleted; pulled the 252SE home and got 12mpg. Probably could’ve taken it easy and maybe got a mile or two more to the gallon but the construction we ran into made us an hour behind so we wanted to get home. I’m on my original transmission at 176k miles, crazy I know. Just recently did a tranny filter and fluid change after 60k miles, fluid was still red and barely any shavings on the magnet.

mine's an LT, not an LTZ, so not all of the fancy stuff. No adaptive cruise (I would love that) and the exhaust brake doesn't pull regular braking into the picture as far as i know. But that engine is a beast, the truck is quiet, the 10 speed is a dream.

I got this the other day and thought someone may find it useful.

That's a cool slide show. Ford has so many different equipment builds, the actual towing capacity can vary even with trucks that seem very similar with the same engine. Not sure how well known this is, but here's another Ford tool where you can enter your VIN and it gives you the tow capacity based on the actual equipment delivered with your truck. Of course, if anything was moded, then things change.

I’ve used that calculator before! Makes it pretty easy to determine if you are A within limits, and B how much more load you can add and stay within limits.

That gives me tow anxiety 🤣 your sidewalls must’ve been on fire!

When we tow up north about half is at 70 on the interstate and the other half is 63 on the state highways, so slightly skewed data set, but still - it’s not single digit. Always amazes me how much 7-10mph can change your towing MPGs.

I was told once that the difference in air resistance between 55 and 65 is double. For my truck in 10th with the 3:55 end gears, thats 1600 rpm which is the beginning of the peak of the torque curve, so 65 is the best max tow speed, while 55 is the best tow speed for mpg. If I’m not going far and I won’t be a menace on the road I tow at 55…the rpm is below peak torque but lower air resistance and engine speed.. but! Its nice having good tires, Goodyears, so when I want to cruise at 75 to get some where because time is of the essence then I can.
