Joining the Carbon seal fun!

Engine side? Not sure I follow. That shaft goes all the way to the engine. It's all the way installed in that pic.

Nevermind @veedubtek looks like there are two versions of the shaft.

Looks like the search engines are starting to catch the carbon seal issues on these boats, and people are coming to this forum to post about it.

Ok so I've been reading about this and I'm curious if there's a way to inspect the issue and to catch it before a catastrophic failure.... Without taking anything apart. My boat has about 25hrs on it and floats at a dock most of the time. It currently takes on zero water of any kind (yay!) So I'm pretty sure I don't have this issue. Furthermore, since I don't take it out of the water often, from what I understand the risk is much lower since I don't run the engine out of the water.

But it would be nice if there was a way to monitor this problem. Alternatively, inspect when I winterize the boat once a year. Thoughts?

Hmmm. As I was pulling my boat out of the water last weekend I noticed that my bilge kicked on. After it stopped I opened the drain plug and maybe a gallon poured out. I didn't think much of it until you said yours usually has no water coming out.

Edit: I don't know if this matters but that was the first time the boat has been out of the water since late April.

Was the water warm? If so, you have a leak.

Everything was good. Have had the boat in the water everyday since and haven't even heard or seen the bilge run once.

I know the Glastron's hold a ton of water in the ski locker, so its possible it was just collecting there and it wasn't until you were taking it out that it actually drained back.

You may want to rethink the use of CRC 6.56 on the engine and engine compartment, where it says plastic safe on most ( some plastics ) it may not be rubber safe. The carbon seal depends on the bellows preload tension on the ring to seal. If this is compromised it will fail. Not to take away responsibility away from anyone for a defective part or installation issue, but this could be suspect. I use silicon spray that says may be used on plastic, rubber, and vinyl. I even spray my trailer with it. This type of seal has been used for years in all kinds of application including auto, commercial, and home water pumps. May not use a rubber bellows, but use some sort of preload tension on a carbon ring to seal. Just my two cents worth. I am at 108 hrs. and hope that I do not have that kind of problem and also hope it last longer than 150 to 200 hrs.

Well, it looks like I'm joining the club as well, I haven't had any issues with my boat prior to this (71 hours), but I've been noticing an odd vibration from the starboard engine the past few times I've been out. My family and I were planning on going to a local lake today and before leaving I just wanted to double check. Very obvious black line right below the carbon seal, very frustrated to say the least. Looks like it will be spending the rest of the summer at the dealer..:(

You may be a victim of mis-alignment...

@Chad That is definitely the seal going bad. I agree with @Slugger55 , your engine/shaft isn't aligned.
WD-40 Specialist silicon spray
I used that on my Yamaha, and I had writing coming off some of the engine tags, and the edges of some of the plastics turning yellow. Ill stick with the CRC, Ive been using it on my boats and skis for almost a decade.

This looks to be the first 215 / twin engine with the alignment issue? most of the issues seem to be with the 195.... I better check my boat if Chad's photo's are an early sign....

The black mark is normal. Sometimes during yard takeoff the accordian and seal can back off the retaining plate a hair. On our high powered seadoo skis we will sometimes put orings on the accordian to put more pressure against the retaining plate because it will suck it back and cavitate. Plus it's a wet kind of seal so that will happen. The only way to really tell is to fold the rubber flap off the back pto seal thing that a right over the carbon seal and make sure it's all centered up as a quick way to tell. Really you need a alignment tool to check it with.

Dude, please don't come to this site, and start to pass information that is not true. There are people on here that rely on this website to find answers to their issues, and comments like these and your last few posts are not going to help. The "rubber seal thingy" is called a bellows. Please get your information straight and facts together before you post.

The black mark is formed by the carbon burning off, and shooting through the metal retaining cap with the water. That means the seal is giving out, and there is now a space between the shaft, and the carbon seal.

WD-40 Specialist silicon spray

Check out Johnsons Silicon Spray. You used to be able to get it at Oriellys, Now I just buy it from Amazon.

It doesn't leave a wet residue like WD-40 or most silicon sprays and and is safe on all materials. I've used this on all my skii's, yamaha jet boat and now my MC and as well my golf cart batteries with incredible success. Engine looked brand new after 6years of use in the Yami.

And if you want to discuss these other posts your talking about let me know. Ive commented on the ecu reflash stuff and there is loads of information on Greenhulk about the steps of mods and routes to take to get more power and rpm

Anyone have the part number for a carbon seal kit? According to greenhulk the seal itself is 272000177.

TIA
