Not another subwoofer ? And stereo talk (sound video clips)

The rest of my gear came in today! Man these revo 8 speakers look like subs. Looks like I'm going to be busy this weekend.

I'm running 4awg power and ground wire and splitting it with two distribution blocks into two 4awg amps (htx-6, m400-4) when I add this jl 600/6 I'm going to change the blocks to allow the 3 amps. Do you think im fine with the 4awg main wire. I would hate to change out 19' of wire it's exspensive.

When complete, I'll have:
(6) ws xs650's - htx-6 amp
(2) revo 8 speakers - m400-4 amp(bridged)

(2) rev 8 towers (4 channels bridged)
(1) jl m10w5 jl m600/6 (bridged)

I may be developing a problem lol.... wife said mid life crisis. I'm only 37!

While my gut will say 0 gauge is a must, we can be a little more technical to be sure to help others. The easiest way to do this is to add up all the fuse ratings from all three amps. Then you can compare this amperage rating to the length of wire needed in a wire gauge chart. I will post a image of one when I get to a computer.

HTX-6 = 50 amps
M400/4 = 40 amps
M600/6 - 50

Total = 140 amps

Plenty of charts so I will just use one from CrutchField, since they are rather reliable.

Gauge-Chart.jpg

We can see that 140 amps at 19 feet requires 2 gauge. It is right on the edge of requiring 0 gauge (and 2 is difficult to find), I would upgrade to 0.

Have you seen the 4awg KnuKonzepots cable in person?
It is way more substantial than many a 0.

I can not fathom needing a true 0 in this application - for a boat stereo. You guys are ridiculous, sorry.
Unless you plan on running a welder there or something, at the helm.

Ninja EDIT: BTW - WakeMakers cables for their power hungry JOhnson pumps are gauge 12. 20-30 ft is normal lenght of some of those harnesses.
Quality will often be the issue not the sheer size.

Over and out (I'm admittedly not an expert).

To put this into perspective 4 awg has a 25 square mm cross section, 2 awg has 35, and 0 awg 55. The heat caused by resistance in the wire is the issue. Your amps may also run hotter and less efficient on under sized wire. The question to ask yourself is do you really want to chance burning up an amp, melting wire, or a possible fire on your boat. Add to that you are in FL and heat is the issue. Some people get away with it and high quality wire does perform better but why chance it to save a few bucks. Not intending to be a butt as you are on the edge and as said some folks run right on the edge and are fine. You need to make the right decision for you and hopefully knowing the numbers and impact helps you do that.

I learned the hard way at 18 years old on a tight budget. I installed a monster amp and a monster custom sub box that I built with a cheap install kit in the trunk of my car. I thought I was cool causing vibrations in the ground. I melted wire, burned the carpet and light smoke started to fill the car from the trunk right before the positive wire grounded out to the sheet metal and my car shut off. I was lucky no flames ignited right over my gas tank. Needless to say I always play it safe with wire and connections today and part of the reason I know so much now is because of my past mistakes.

Yes, and while all of it is subjective... I would consider their wire normal compared to other quality OFC wire. Strand Count is similar across quality wire. Because it is a boat, I would be more inclined to play it safe than in a car. Just because you in water, doesn't mean you can put out a fire easier lol.

EDIT: Mainah beat me to it, in a much more technical sense lol. The point remains the same though - to small to cause heat and potentially cause a fire.

The OP will spend an extra $200 on wire. Sure it sucks, but he has at least that invested ten fold into the stereo alone.

Happened to see your alert come through while on. That is awful wire. It is CCA (copper clad aluminum) per the listing. Without going too deep the number one wire type to never use for anything is CCA.
I know, see my edit

Nice @CraigAR new toys....

I think there is a formula of sorts based on the length of the run for the wire and the draw of the amps. I am also adding a 3rd amp, same 600/6 you got, and.had my installer run all 0 gauge JL wire for power and ground last year when I had the 1st two amps installed.

I would prob upgrade the 4 guage to be on the safe side

Guess I beat you to it but you obviously know. I don't even understand why that stuff is made besides being cheap. Way too many cheap install kits use this stuff and the folks buying those don't know better. That stuff should come with a warning on the package.

Tinned OFC also call tinned pure copper is best for a boat but OFC or Pure copper is ok but not my preference.

The JL marine wire that another member here used turned out to be the exact same stuff as KnuKonceptz flexs with of course the JL name on the casing instead. The JL wire was 3x the cost though.

Thanks for the responses guys. I will be upgrading to 1/0 awg wire and because I don't want to wait for the wire looks like I'll be paying out the ass from west marine today.

@adrianp89 you have your sub box underneath the seat right? Do you remember what your outside dimensions are? I'm looking to pick up a box on my way home from work and really don't want to stop home to measure my seat lol

No, my sub is mounted IB.

As far as wire, have you looked at Amazon to see what wire they have on Prime same day? I am afraid of what West Marine pricing is like. KnuKonceptz is about $170 for 50feet.

I may just order it and wait. West Marine wants something like $7.78 per foot so outrageous.

@Drift Away I think I saw you post a pictire of a q-bomb box underneath your seat. Do you remember the size of that box if so.

Ok just swapped out the icon 8's and the new Rev 8's and holy shit! What a difference! So crystal clear and loud. No "bright" sound at all like the icon 8's. I've been running the icons for almost a year now and I would have to say anyone debating about getting either or to spend the extra $300 and get the rev 8's. No lost sound in the boat either they complement the in boat speakers as the icons did. The big difference is when you step on the swim platform they sound full and clear and when your back 80-100' they are clear and not fuzzy sounding.
Should have the new amp board complete tomorrow along with cutting in the revo 8's and the sub. Waiting on the new wire and sub box to get here. Will take pictures and let everyone know about the bow location. I have a good feeling about those massive sized 8"speakers mounted low sounding great.

@CraigAR where did you decide the install the 8's?

Glad the project is coming together nicely.

I'm going to place them in location 1 on my previous picture. I messed around with placing some beat pills up there and that location had the best sound.
