SMD DD-1 Distortion tool, Anyone used one?

Yes that's very helpful thanks! Are there certain minimum specs needed in a scope, will either of theses work? Or what inexpensive scope would you or David Analog recommend?

For 150 bucks the DD-1 does the exact same thing and you have to play a 1k and a 40hz, one for highs and one for lows to find the in between setting.

Make sure when using the SMD for HU to measure the highs at max volume without clipping and measure the lows/bass at max volume without clipping and set it most likely at lows/bass level to keep you in the safe zone. Sometimes you can set it in between depending on how far volume levels are apart from both frequencies.

I have used it for 3 stereos now, all turned out awesome!!

2 more to tune this weekend.

I'm glad I found this post. I've been tuning my boat by ear which I typically do in all of my car audio installs while also using a rta. Jl recommends using a voltmeter however I found a post elsewhere where JL compared the DD1 against their method and they said the DD1 would be a step up from there's.

With that it's a lot of money I think for a single user. However I've also spent a ton on the system so far with plans to add more and a ton of time trying to tune it by ear while out on the water.

I hoped to find one used or to rent but looks like I'll have to buy one. Pretty excited to get the foundation (gains on HU and AMP) dialed in properly before going back to adjusting the frequencys to suit my tastes. A voltmeter or oscilloscope would be cheaper but I like the "easy mode" method of the DD1.

You will not be disappointed. Just make sure to set everything to flat, Headunit, amps, equalizers. Let us know if you have any questions. I've been using this for years now. Happy lake season
