There is NO WAY this truck can go into production. He had to admit they missed the mark and start OVER! He forces this... And refuses to admit defeat... Could be the end of Tesla. And I want nothing more than for him to succeed.
Agreed.

I have no idea how he's going to get that exoskelton equipped, insane accelerating locomotive heavy thing through crash testing. It's so damn rigid it'll transfer all the energy right into the cabin and occupants. Not to mention what it will do to whatever it hits.

Think I prefer the Rivian but it is two years away we shall see. I agree the presentation was poor but Franz breaking the glass was epic!

The Model Y was incredibly underwhelming and even the new Roadster is extremely conventional. Why not have a wacky product? And how do you figure this could be the end of Tesla? S, X, 3, and Y are all still very conventional. The legacy automakers do concept cars all the time. Some of them are way out there.

At the end of the day, it'll be 3 years before this thing is in production. A lot could change between now and then.

This is the ugly date that is great fun to be with but you are terrified that someone might see you with. Incredibly great specs and so ugly I thought it was a joke right up until the event was over. Seriously. I'm a huge Tesla fan, and this thing is too butt ugly to be seen in.

I think Elon smoked one too many blunts for that “truck” design. Put the pipe down Elon :D

I think Musk must of gotten his inspiration from the movie Total Recall. One day, when we inhabit Mars this truck will fit right in.

Did Doc Brown return from the future and get high with Elon? Some neat features and specs for sure. The front and rear “bumper” appearance are not bad but the rest of the body lines just don’t appeal to me. There will be a niche market for this but the current 1/2 ton truck segment has nothing to worry about IMO. I think the big three will nail mass market appeal much better with their future electric offerings. Rivian has a better chance in the electric pickup truck market at this point.

Putting aside appearance the functionality and capabilities are good. A design with more mass market appeal would have been a much better business decision. Tesla stock lost 5% at market open today while the rest of the market is slightly up and probably laughing their butts off. Elon is a visionary and I love that but he has not been doing Tesla any favors recently. I would like to see him focus on space x and hire someone to replace him at Tesla.

The capabilities really are awesome. I love the tailgate that turns into a ramp. 16" of ground clearance with no differential pumpkins? Very cool. 14,000 pound tow rating. Nice. 500 mile range is great, but I would have liked to have seen more for towing. (Probably 200 - 250 with a boat behind it.) Built in aerodynamic bed cover; very nice. Driving around Portland the Antifa rioters wouldn't be able to drag you out of your car. Very, very nice. Dynamically controlled suspension, very nice. $39K, very, very nice. 0 - 60 in 2.9 seconds, very very awesome. If they redesign the looks and re-release it with those specs and prices, they could put a huge dent in the truck market. If it looked like this, I'd be fighting everyone to give them my money:

Looks like the top of a 275. Is round the next styling trend?

now that looks pretty cool. Still out there, but I think it would appeal to many more consumers. The final models never look as cool as the prototypes though. Take the Ford Atlas for example. This truck would have been bad ass but the released F150 was toned down.

I'm certain the design has a lot to do with the exoskeleton strength as the article implies. One of the strongest shapes is a triangle. The wedge is probably the most robust option. If you start complicating it with a bunch of folds, creases, and roundness you'll quickly compromise the integrity. I think the exoskeleton is a brilliant way to save weight and cost but it may be has some design limitations when it comes aesthetics. I don't see this iteration of the Cybertruck robbing a great deal of the market share.

Yep.

Incidentally, this is also more or less exactly what was said about first Teslas, when they released their first 100 or so cars back in the 2000s.
They don't seem to chase the market (is it the other way around?)...

And silly shticks with a hammer and 9mm bullets (and silly tires) are simply publicity stunts that (obviously) work - we talking about it here on a JETBOATERS forum, lolol

Cannot agree more re: Elon.

But I will also say, if they can deliver the level of performance they are promising at the price point they are promising, they are throwing down the gauntlet to Rivian et al. Rivian's specs are WAY off from Tesla's and at a much higher price. Neither truck exists of course so it's just comparing text on websites at this point. It's easy to promise the moon for free. But it'll be interesting to watch this develop.

It also has a lot to do with ease of production. Tesla regularly gets bogged down when trying to mass produce their cars. The fewer bends, creases, etc. the easier it is to manufacture. They also are regularly criticized for large panel gaps (although both of our Model S's have been made as well as any Japanese or German car). Fewer, simpler, panels mean less chance of fitment issues.

I went ahead and put down a deposit. I'll see how it develops over the next few years.
