Hello all. We’re new owners of a SX190, first jet drive boat we’ve owned. I have a question about the 1.8 liter HO. It was marketed as a 40 mph plus top end boat. 7400 rpm’s and it struggles to hit 32. Two adults and two small children on board. Is this really all it’s got or is something missing? Really disappointed in the performance.

Conditions? Altitude? What did you have on the boat as far as gear?

Either way, unless boating at HIGH altitude, it seems low. My 2015 190 has no problem hitting 38 on the GPS w/ dual batteries, 2 amp/4 8" speaker/ 2 subs, full gear, and 2 adults in 100+ degree weather.

What year is it?

Elevation is about 780 ASL mid 70’s calm water. Nothing in the boat but two adults, two small children and 1/2 tank of gas. Safety gear and life jackets, that’s about it.

How many hours do you have on it? It may be reduced some till you get past 10 hours. Should be able to get 7800 rpms.

I'm not sure why all the new 2020's are coming out the factory with these low top speeds. My 2019 reached 38-42mph GPS verified pretty much right after break in. With 2 adults, my child and gear and full tank, I can consistantly get 38 and I'm at about 1,000 elevation.

Less than 10. We’re having other craftsmanship issues as well. Really second guessing that Yamaha “quality”. Boats going back to dealer in the morning.
Was it your first time out? Seems like a common issue mine definitely opened up after 10 hours see this thread:

it was our first time out. Along with the motor issues,
the cleat for the table fell off in the floor first time we tried to use it, and the latch that holds the motor cover snapped off while driving to the lake. Had to rob the latch off the wet storage to keep it shut. Really disappointed in our supposedly new boat.

What’s your average cruising speed? Have you pulled a tube with yours?

Yeah I’ve had same thoughts initially, my glove box fell on the floor while towing cause their hot glue failed, I used JB weld, now it’s not going anywhere. Seats had loose brackets, my Bimini flew off as they had not used lock tite on the little screws holding it to window frame, cup holder rings flew out on highway, now double sided tape to keep them there, also carpet snaps were stripped out of the gate, used 4200 and epoxy to fix them. A bunch of small stuff. 1 yr later , I’m enjoying it after I did all the quality checks.

After my break in our 2020 XS 190 I was able to hit 38 mph easily (7500rpm) with 4 and a full tank at 1200 elevation. Just recently with 6 adults loaded with two tubes, Matt and coolers I hit 34. I have cobra thrust vectors even in full down mode. Now this weekend I’m planning on doing my ten hour service and expect a bit more considering recent posts stating a better somewhat improvement in my top end. The water temps where I’m at are 60-65 degrees.

Yeah I forgot to mention the cup holder rings, lost one the first trip down the lake. Really disheartening! what motor are you running? The performance is really what has me worried, cruising at 27-28 just isn’t doing It for us.

I’ve got the SX 190 also, 2019. currently 45 hours. I’ve pulled my 215lb buddy on a tube and easily had him flapping in the wind lol... don’t get discouraged it’s pretty good boat after the small kinks are sorted. My daughter really doesn’t like to speed much so we cruise pretty slow but when I’m alone, I can reach 41-42 on calm water with fairly full tank. 38 is pretty much a regular top speed minimum. Maybe Yamaha finally put something in these 2020 computer to limit rpms during break in, who knows .

when I’m alone I’d cruise at 26-28mph as that’s the sweet spot for me but it’ll do full throttle all day I’m sure if I needed to.

The one thing I’m missing from the start of this thread is it wasn’t mentioned about doing the initial break in. I’m sure this is very important as I’ve read and may effect top speeds I’m sure right out of the box.

I always break in per manufacturer recommendations regardless of machine, do the same for motorcycles, cars, etc... I read the manual for the Yami and did exactly as they recommended albeit so boring .... lol good point
Only 1:35 total break in required thoughB3EC2EA6-1EAE-4138-8410-F5E5656FB926.png

I have read so many reports of the 2019 and 2020 redesigns losing about 5MPH vs prior years. Wonder if the new redesign impacted that.
