Took a 30 mile cruise today at the florida intercoastal waterway from Sebastian to Palm Bay (15 miles each way) for the total of 30 miles. How come my fuel gauge is still 100% when I check before I got back to the dock. Does Yamaha have one of those gauge that will suddenly drop to half tank or is there something wrong with my fuel gauge? At one point when I slowed down I saw it at 98% but returned to 100%. I have a 40 gallon fuel tank.

I have a 2017 with a 32 gallon tank; my gauge behaves normally (going down at a gradual rate). It is biased to show less fuel than it actually has in the tank; at the 1/4 mark I still have 12 gallons left. The low fuel warning comes on at 6 gallons.

Thank you I need to check if the float is stuck on mine.

@fatboyroy I have a 2021 AR190 and my fuel gauge acts crazy. It will read 100% for most of the day then suddenly drop to 60% or so. I contacted my local service department and was told this can be normal with my type of fuel tank. I pushed the I believe button for now because so far it's not causing me to much frustration.

OK thanks, I suspected that too, they probably haven't adjusted the old float to make it accurate for 40 gallon tank. I think the fuel consumed display is accurate so I can use that for reference. Just need to make sure to reset every time I fill up so I keep track of whats left in the tank.

Same with the 2021 p w c gauges, I run for hours and get 100 percent then all of a sudden it starts to drop gradually then faster, I use the old fashion fuel gauge on the skies, I lift the seat and look at the tank. But yes the fuel sending units are a bit weird on the new skies and probably true with the boats.

Ya no big deal for me I think I can manage, but when I go offshore I just need to pay attention closely cause of the useless gauge lol.

My 2021 is the same. 100% for 25 miles then it just drops to 60%. You would think they could do a gauge with a little more accuracy.

If I recall correctly, prior year fuel senders reset by running them to below 1/4 of a tank and then filling to full. It may be that yours is not calibrated yet?

Admittedly a long shot given the other reports of inaccuracy...

Good to know there is a chance lol. I will try this and report back result.

Hey FBR,

Any luck with your fuel gauge?
Gauge still stay at full tank, but I haven't tried to bring fuel down to 1/4 tank yet, every time I go out, I fill it up and ends up using half tank (20 gallon). I always say to myself next time, dont fill up and let the fuel go low but I always fill up in case something fun comes up I dont have to cut trip short cause I dont have fuel.

Yesterday I took my boat out for the first full day since I bought it. I had 8 people in it doing water sports for a few hours with a little cruising in there as well. Gauge showed 100% for the first hour or so then gradually dropped but even then, I think I pulled the boat out at 60-70% fuel when I definitely burned more than that.

@TexAg16 Did you verify that by refilling and checking the fuel put in vs. what the gauge indicated?

@fatboyroy how does the fuel used compare with how much fuel you put in? As a FYI, on my 2020 210 FSH the fuel graph turns yellow at 16%. The low fuel warning came on once at 10% I think…I’ll check my manual and see if that agrees with what I remember.… the manual does not state at which level the low fuel warning comes on.

On my boat, I have found the gauge to be very accurate. From full it takes a bit to drop while moving, when it does, it will drop to between 86-92%, then when I stop and am floating it will return to say 96%. When the tank is getting low the level will fluctuate by about 2-4% between starting and stopping but quickly returns to a static level once the boat stabilizes in either floating or running. I’ve filled the boat up about 6 times now and it takes an additional .5 to 1 gallon of what I calculated, I attribute this to fuel held in the fill hose from the tank to the fuel cap.

My transits are usually pretty short between stops, maybe 15-20 mins on average, and this may contribute to my fuel gauge being a bit more accurate vs. someone who makes longer trips. @Liveto99 what has your experience been? I’ll be making some long transits this summer so I’ll have a better idea then of the fuel gauge performance.

Looking at the parts fische I would think the fuel sender in my tank is a resistance type of sender and not a float type. Makes sense as a float type would be all over the place when on the water.

I just finished filling up gas ... boat shows 73% and it’s 13 gallon. You can also reset stat so at the start of your day “consumed gas” is 0. Looks pretty accurate on mine 12.9 gallon vs actual 13.2

Right on… that is useful information! This is a useful tool when ranging far from where you put in at, and for fuel consumed vs. projected fuel burn in the planning stage of a given trip. I recently made an 11.2 mile run after resetting the screen and recorded 4.48 gallons of fuel used for 2.5 mpg, not bad considering conditions and people and cargo loading. I did these sorts of checks with a multifunction hand held slide rule when I was flying small aircraft.

12.9 measured vs. 13.2 actual is pretty close, especially when you take into account how much fuel the fill line can hold.

I want to be sure I understand your quote correctly.

1-The tank was at 73% and you filled the tank with 13.2 gallons of fuel to get the tank to 100%?

Or

2-You filled the tank and it only shows 73%?

If statement 1 above is correct, the tank should have taken 10.8 gallons of fuel. (40-27%=10.8 gallons)
To have taken 13 gallons, the fuel gauge should have read 67%

If statement 2 is correct, perhaps after you drive a bit the fuel gauge will read 100%?

The gauge is 73% I’m trying to see if I can read the gauge so whenever I end my day I will look at the gauge percent and compare what actual gas consumed when I fill it up.

Also I was boating on and off from 8am to 4pm and gauge moved only in the last hour or so. Most of the day it’s at 100%

Okay,

So the gauge was at 73% when you put 13 gallons in it, and now after 8 hours on the water it’s just now started to drop from 100%.

Please let me know how many gallons the trip meter indicates was used, and what percentage the main fuel gauge shows just before you fill the tank.

There may be a discrepancy between how many gallons were used vs. the fuel gauge in percent, depending on how full you filled the tank because the fuel fill line will hold a fair amount of fuel.

Trip meter indicate 12.9 gallon used for 35 miles. I always fill up after boating before I park the boat and yes some pump auto stop before full tank so u gotta take that into account. And yes the gauge stuck in 100% most of the day, drops towards end of the day to 73 right before I got to the dock.
