First trip to Oahe this year, much later than I wanted to but it was well worth the wait, best salmon fishing I’ve had there yet. Not a lot of fish on the boat, but we did put about 7 on the boat over three long days with quite a few knock downs / strikes that popped the line out of the clips, and a couple fish on that got off.

My friend towed my boat with his MoHome and I towed my Toy Hauler out to Oahe Downstream campground #3.

I always look forward to going to Richie Z’s bbq and there was a German menu for a couple of nights…I had Rouladen, interesting dish.

First fish of the trip…

We picked up my friends wife at the dock on day one around noon and she fished with us the rest of the day and the next morning…

The mornings were cool and breezy and the afternoons were hot….

Interesting thing about these fish, they’re all four year olds and at the end of their life cycle, they either had eggs or sperm in them and ready for the spawn, and nothing in their stomachs. These fish migrate up lake to the hatchery at Whitlock where they climb the ladders and are relived of their eggs and sperm that goes to the hatchery. Before the flood in 2011, when the emergency spillway was wide open for three months as the Missouri raged, a lot of the rainbow smelt and salmon were washed away. Before 2011 it was pretty normal for a boat of five fishermen to head out at daybreak and be back at the fish cleaning station with their daily limit of five fish by 1000 hrs.

We dropped off my friends wife around 1300 hrs on Sunday and picked up our friend Dave. Those became friends decades ago when they were crewing for Anthony Shay’s Bad Co fishing.

Lunch on the boat was bbq’d hot dogs while underway, street taco torts and cheddar cheese makes for great hot dogs while holders.

Up at 0430 and on the water by 0800 each day until 1700-1800, off to the fish cleaning station then cleaned up and dinner by 2000 hrs, in bed at 2200 hrs. Long days of trolling, I think I put about 30 hours on the engines.

Boaty McBoat Face fishing boat, a very nice boat to have on the cool windy mornings, but it’s hard to beat the swim deck on my FSH for landing fish!

IMG_9020.jpeg

Had to get up next to the Dam to be out of the wind and the sporty conditions to make lunch one day…

Another nice fish….a 10#’er the biggest of the trip. All in all we probably made off with 15-16#’s of Salmon fillets.

I’m glad I had pre made spares of double snelled hook set ups as we went through several sets due to them being damaged during catches. The fish above had tweaked the 30# floro leader just above the hooks and the line broke when I was removing the hooks.

The 26 gallon live well kept the fish alive for hours before they got bled and put on ice. Such an awesome fishing machine!
