Hi All

I'm trying to help out a family member with their jet boat, it has a Hamilton Jet engine with HERC (Hamilton Electronic Reverse Control) system.
The issue put simply- the bucket moves good as gold in the forward position and sounds perfect, but when the controller is moved to reverse, the motor sounds like its under strain, the motor heats up, and the bucket moves extremely slowly down. So slow it takes 2 or 3 minutes to go from up to down you have to look very close to notice it is moving.
I don’t know a lot about these systems so any ideas would be much appreciated!

Im not familure with that setup but I would start by removing the linkage to the bucket and manually move between positions to make sure there is no binding or excessive resistance to help isolate which part is actually causing the problem. If everything on the bucket side is good then you know its something in the motor or electronics.

Might get more views and feedback in the general or classic boats sections?

Also in the "no experience with these" camp, but to me, this sounds like a cable binding up. If this proves to be the case, the plus is that it is at least moving, albeit slowly. Look for the cable luber / lubing thread around here for ideas. Alternatively, the only other thing that comes to mind is likely the motor used to move the bucket has some corrosion somewhere inside, or a gear that's hanging up on something (not sure if there's a separate gear used for reverse, not likely, but possible 🤷‍♂️ )

@212s has a good idea for getting more eyes on your situation. Good luck!

Could the bucket be moving via hydraulic motor? Perhaps the flow control valve is worn/sticking?

Hadn't considered that possibility, but you could be right. Possibly filter issues if hydraulics are in play as well.
