I am looking for a better system myself as far as deploying a retrieving the anchor, I had a bit of a mishap while deploying my anchor recently and decided that a better system was necessary.
I looked at doing the windlass, but it appears that the best way to do that on our boats would be to go through the bow stem. This would be A LOT of work to say the least. So what I’m planning on doing is to make a removable roller for those times that I will be using the anchor.
Another thing that I’ve noticed is that even with a 9# fluke type anchor and 20’ of 5/16” stainless chain, and a 5# pound fluke anchor with 6’ of 5/16” chain in the anchor locker, that this weight makes the boat bow heavy enough that water on the deck does not head immediately to the stern and the deck drain. So I’d think a windlass would make this issue worse.
Don‘t mean to throw a wet rag on your idea but this is what I’ve come up with so far.
