2015 Yamaha Jet Boat Pictures

I'd assume Yamaha has already run twin supercharged motors at sometime within their R&D development. Only to find what some on here are saying, 2 or 3 extra mph for a massive increase in fuel consumption.

10 years ago I was really into pwc. I had a yamaha gp1300r and I dumped a ton of money into go fast parts. I was the guy nobody could beat on the water in my area which I thought was cool. Until I got bored and realized how much money I'd drop just to go 1mph faster. For me personally I realized I wasted a lot of money. That's when I sold the pig and got into stand ups.

For me boating is about hanging out on the water, relaxing, and being with friends and family. No disrespect intended towards anyone that's into going fast on their boat. Just not my thing. Been there, done that. 51mph vs 55mph so what. Even 65mph in these boats isn't going to impress me to the point where I wouldn't mind spending more at the pump.

I do understand the mentality of their flagship standing out in a league of its own. I just think they'd be hurting their sales. What I didn't realize before was the price difference between the AR and the LS. For that much of a price difference I would have thought the LCD screen should be an LS only item. For a new buyer it's pretty hard to justify the bump in price.

I think the speed issue is mostly "done" at yamaha. I'm not exactly on their R&D team or anything, but I've done a good bit of research, comparisons, graphs etc. to get over myself.
FIRST let me clarify - If you have to ask why you want to go fast, then you'll never understand. Some of us are just speed nuts. We like going fast even if for a few seconds just like you may like getting up on your wake surf board, or doing the latest mod to your boat.
You have heard time and again that the pumps are the limiting factor. No one really knows WHY and many have tried to analyze it to death. I've gone and analyzed it from the opposite direction. What has the speed result been with extra horsepower? What are other jet pumps doing? Is there an efficient point of the pump? How does it compare to other brands? (sea doo, hamilton, berkely)

Long story short, the current 155mm pumps are at a great spot with the 180 hp 1.8's. They are in a great efficency range and the motor has enough torque to do your sports. If you put 250 hp to them, you need to upgrade the pumps, which yamaha did for the waverunners. They bumped it to 160mm and gave a better vein design. They realized the same thing I did. For a comparison, a Hamilton pump is stated that it can take 350 hp and is 210mm. This is a ratio of approximatly 1.6 Yamaha reaches this same 1.6 point with a 155mm pump at 258 hp. I don't think it's a coincidence that they upgraded their pump at that point.

The power/efficiency curve starts to level out pretty quickly at 200 hp and you are overcoming the pump limits by throwing more power at it. Sea Doo also uses 155mm pumps, which is again why it takes 500+ hp to go that fast. Scarab is supposed to have those same twin 255 hp engines and when I was at the Chicago boat show, the guy showed me pictures and and texts from some big shot that sent him info about the 24'. He stated he was doing 65 mph. I can maybe believe it if they upgraded as well to the 160mm pump.

Yamaha has obviously made the decision to make an AWESOME boat but more on the luxury side. The scarabs look more like a fancy toy. I actually prefered the Glasstron ones as they looked much more sophisticated, but they won't be having the twin 255 hp engines either. The fact that Yamaha is addressing issues here is just awesome, and I'm sure it will continue.

Hopefully this is what the compitition does to Yamaha!

I used to have a 21' wellcraft , it would go 60-62 on gps consistently with a merc 350. A merc 350 has 300hp

I would be pissed if i had 500 hp on a 21' boat that only went 59

I didn't realize the 21' foot boat you were talking about was a jet boat. sorry for my post.

PS - the tower differences are huge, worth at least 2k at least to me. And I'm not referring to the lights or the speakers.
Good catch. I had not noticed the different towers. Although I'm not sure I agree with your $2,000 difference in valuation between the towers.
an AR240 is $53,5 & a 242 LS is 60,5 so 7k difference in price.
On Yamaha's website, I see MSRP's listed as this:

SX240 $50.5k (no tower)
AR240 $$53.5k (with tower)
242Limited $58.5k (no tower)
242LimitedS $61.5k (with tower)

That looks to me like an $8k msrp difference between 240 or 242 with or without tower.

I edited my post on the difference in price.

I want to hear what everyone thinks once they start to get to dealer's and people can see them in person.

Good catch on the tower. At first glance at small pics, I assumed they were the same. I definitely like the LS tower much more, as I did in the 10-14 version.

Noticed the LS has an upgraded gas cap cover, but it appears the 240 has the sportier steering wheel. Looking forward to seeing these when they arrive at the local showroom. I hope I do not get too jealous of the new LS owners. I think I will favor the gray with white tower.

242 is aluminum & synthetic leather

I'm liking the grey and white AR with the red stripe.

Any photos of how the biminis stow? They never show those in the beauty shots! :)

Awesome pics. The hinged seats look a little better in your pics. The tower is still too far back and disproportioned to me. Can't stand the colors either. Loving that captain;s chair though!
