Hello Folks,
I am new to the forum and I thought I should reach out for some possible insight and guidance.

I have a 2019 AR195 Yamaha jet boat. Delightful boat, lots of fun. It has just 110 hours on it, runs in fresh water (Upstate NY), has been well maintained (oil changes, plugs, air filter, new coil sticks), but I started having troubles this summer (4th season on the water with this boat for us).

Performance had become a bit erratic earlier in the summer, with transitory RPM drops (e.g., 6200 rpm running, momentarily drop to 5800, then back up to 6200 rpm) while cruising. Plugs, air filter, fuel treatments, coil sticks replaced, but erratic performance continued. Yamaha tech raised question about possible supercharger issue.

At any rate, in late July, the supercharger clutch failed. Boat wouldn't go above 12mph (full throttle), supercharger turbine turned in both directions effortlessly when inspected.

I had a new supercharge clutch installed in mid-August by a highly reputable technician that does a lot of supercharger work. He installed the new, beefier clutch (as per Yamaha upgrade), and all seemed good to go.

I had the boat back on the water in late-August for 4-5 low intensity runs (i.e., not skiing, not wide open, just cruising, rarely above 6500rpm).

But, after just 8 hours the new supercharger clutch failed! :(

Nothing else has changed with the engine other than the new supercharger clutch in mid-August.

Thought I would reach out to the group to see if people had any ideas as to what could cause a new supercharger clutch to die in 8 hours.

Thanks!

No it shouldn't fail unless there was something your mechanic missed. Did you actually see the part that was installed? There is a lot of replacement cheap "beefier" clutches out there.
Was is a true yamaha part or aftermarket?
Was is from Riva motorsports or Greenhulk?(those i trust)
Second put a blow off valve on to help protect the clutch from unnecessary abuse.

There are some clutches that when you use there there are other modifications that have to be done when you are in there

I’d take it back to the highly reputable tech you had fix it for answers, imo he should warranty this work.

I don’t have one of these boats, but, from everything I’ve read the main cause of failure is unloading the pump-loss of water into the pump, usually from going over a wave and catching a bit of air, then upon landing the rapid reloading the pump causes the sprague clutch to fail.

As @Neutron mentioned, a pop off valve is what I would say is a necessary addition to preserve the clutch.

Thank you. I am planning to speak with the technician this week. You've given me leads on important questions. e.g., was an OEM clutch installed? I am hoping the work and parts will be warrantied.
