I am on track to get my first boat (have a decent amount of experience but never owned) - 99% sure a 242LS in feb/mar. I will be keeping it at Rocketts just south of Richmond. I was curious about any adventuring experiences between Richmond and the bay. I am thinking me and family will spend plenty of time between rockets and Osborne/Richmond Yacht Basin. I am curious if folks have any experience taking longer trips down the James - or up from the bay area. Is it even practical or doable to go the full length?

Curious about any experiences out there...thanks.

meegwell, there are a couple of us Yamies in the Jamestown area. Have taken the trip up to Richmond to the yacht basin and back. Nice trip, refuel there for the trip back. If you come down river there are several places to stop and eat and get fuel. The Surry Seafood Co. near the ferry in Surry, Blue Heron up the Chickahominy river and farther down in Smithfield there is Captain Chuck-a-Muck's and Smithfield Station. You will pass the "Ghost" fleet on the way to Smithfield. I haven't made the trip down to Norfolk yet but several in our area do it. Lots of places down there to check out.

Thanks! Curious and I understand there are many factors but average of just cruising how long of a trip is it from Jamestown to yacht basin?

It's about 1 1/2 to 2 hours at 30-35 mph. Make sure to stay in the channel above the Jordan Point Rd bridge. It can get very shallow.
