TR-1 Starboard Engine Intermittent Starting Issue

Hello! I have a 2023 AR220 Boat that I love; however, I have been experiencing starting issues with the Starboard Engine Only. After spending a day on a sandbar (4-5 hours), the starboard engine does crank but not start. I have to try at least 10 times after it fires up but after the 2nd try there is a lot of gasoline smell. This issue has become a headache because after spending a lot of time under the sun, everyone is so tired and just want to go back to the ramp and then the starboard engine does not cooperate :( Has anyone experienced the same issue? If so, have you found the cause and how to fix it?

I have tried to recreate the issue at home running the engine on water hose, but I cannot recreate it. It has only happened at the sandbars. If I stop for 1-2 hours in a restaurant or when I got home to flush it, both engines start immediately. :(

I had this issue with a 2017 SX210. It went thru a buy back then the new owner reached out to me. He discovered it was some sort of issues with the ECU and reading battery voltage incorrectly.

It could be a number of things though. Next time you go out, keep a bag of ice ready. If the issues happen again, put the bag of ice onto of the engine, and let it sit for 10 minutes then try again. Vapor lock is an issue sometimes, but that is normally a peak summer thing. It can be avoided by idling for 5 minutes or so after WOT (most people do this anyways).
 
The hard start issue has also been traced to too much water in the water locks / mufflers. The next time you’re out try running the no wake mode at level three for 15 seconds with the throttles in neutral just before shut down. So with throttles in neutral, ramp no wake up to level three, 1 one thousand to 15, then ramp no wake back to idle then engines off. Make sure you’re in deep enough water.

Are you at the sand bar bow away from shore?

Thank you! I will try to do that no wake recommendation. Regarding the deep water, we anchor the boat at least 3-4 feet deep water and try to bring it to deeper water when storing the front anchor. After the anchor is safely stored, I proceed to start the engines.

You’re welcome! One of our members here has had a heck of a time with hard starting on his 210 FSH which usust the TR-1 engines, after a long back and forth with Yamaha, Yamaha finally found that the water lock on the starboard engine especially can get too full of water in certain conditions that makes for too much back pressure and hard starting. I’ve verified this myself as I do a lot of trolling and that can happen to my boat as well. The other recommendation Yamaha made was to run the boat in reverse at max power for five seconds. One of our other members down in AZ verified this as well. Just make sure you’re in deep enough water when you do the 15 second no wake mode in neutral thing. I’ve actually found that 10 seconds is sufficient so you might try the 15 seconds first and see how that works.

I am a bit concerned about the fuel smell you reported, I’ve never had that when I’ve experienced a hard start. Hopefully the no wake mode thing cures your issues.
