I have seen Sandusky Bay mentioned as a watersports locations in several posts. Curious about recommendations for other locations closer to Cleveland.

Also interested in insight/thoughts/tips on anchoring off or beaching Edgewater or other Cleveland beaches?

Lake Erie near Cleveland is not your best option for tubing/waking or anchoring. I’d look inland, West Branch or Berlin Lake. If you’re committed to Erie, outside of Sandusky, the two most popular spots near Cleveland are in Avon Lake west of the power plant, and E 140th cleveland just west of the easterly wastewater plant. They are both bad options IMHO but lots of people go there, mostly because they are marina-based and don’t have better options. You can always try to tie up to the break wall of the flats but it gets real busy on the weekends so be prepared to raft up and make friends.

@Plpbecks, thanks! West Branch is our ‘home’ lake. we rarely go on Erie because watersports are the majority of our day on the lake.
We would like to hang out with friends with a sailboat on Erie but all of our kids are action oriented. Any thoughts on other energy consuming activities for pre-teens on Erie?

You just need to make the trip and trailer 40 minutes West - put in anywhere around Vermilion/Huron/Sandusky - I would say by far Sandusky is your best bet for a full day of action for the kids - restaurants - Bay Point Sand Bar (Bay side is calmer/Lake side is cleaner) - spend the day with your sailboat friends at the sandbar - get Cedar Point passes for twilight hours and go by boat to Famous Daves' for dinner and then walk into the park for some nighttime coaster riding. Sandusky/Marblehead Ohio area is truly perfection for all the things you want to do - Bay is amazing for water sports (my house is on the Bay) - yet short ride to the Lake for fantastic fishing and food and beaches.

I agree with @LakesideLaw but if you’re committed to central basin, tying off to the wall at Flats East is fun, kids can get out of the boat and walk around, play games at the restaurants, look at other boats, just get there early in the day or go late in the season after things slow down. The air show is always fun over Labor Day, anchor or tie up inside the breakwall and the planes will be flying right over your head.

What about fairport harbor? I see a fair amount of boats on the headlands side of the grand river “beached” and the harbor is always calmer than the open lake. Just BEWARE of the submerged sections of brake wall to the East.

Also I see you list west branch as your home lake. I’m going to be camping there this weekend with my 16’ prop center console. What model jet boat do you have? I’m considering the Yamaha 195fsh, but if you have anything you would be able to show/share with me either here on the forum or in person if you’re able/willing, I’d love to hear it before they release the 2022 pricing & I commit to my model (I have $2,000 down but am waiting to get the bill of sale to commit to a model until the new pricing comes out).
