For those with tinted windshield

When I had my stereo installed I asked about tint. While they have a tint shop they would not touch a boat. They told me in order for it to look good they would have to heat the tint on the window to shrink the top. He told me they have cracked boat windows in the past. I have always tinted my cars but never a boat. Has anyone heard of this?

That's what the guy's issue was when I just talked to him about it, he was afraid he would have to heat it too much, but after he saw it in person he said it wouldn't have to be heated so much.

I've called 4 local tint places so far, 3 told me flat out "No Boats". The 4th said "only it the windows are straight without curves". Tomorrow I'm calling the Mastercraft & Nautique dealer to see who they're using.

View attachment 5753 I would do all of them or non. I don't regret having mine done at all, I love it. I had mine done with 3M 5%.

The black frame makes a huge difference too.

I'm also thinking about tinting my 242. Question I have is how would it look with a dark tint but the silver edging around the windows? I wish my boat had black edging (like the boat in the pic above) but my 2013 242 LS (black hull) only was in silver.

I notice the 2014 model 242 LS (black hull) come with black edging.

Anyone with silver edging and some 20% or darker tint want to post a pic (even better if it was a black hull too )?

This seems odd. Every tint shop around here does it. I haven't heard of one turning boats down.

Your never going to get a boat windshield tinted as good as a cars but that should be expected imo. So maybe a lot of people have complained and dealers have just decided to avoid the headache.

They do heat tint to form it to a curved window to make it lay better, I don't think any of the yamaha boats have a single piece of glass formed around a curve. I cant imagine why they would need to heat it on a flat windshield..

Maybe it has to do with location, you can't walk outside down here without seeing a boat, and it is the "Sunshine" state, so maybe they are just used to doing so many down here.

I didn't think they were curved like that, makes since now why they wouldn't want to do them. I'm sure they are not cheap to replace,

Okay, just finished this up this morning. Tinted my windows for a grand total of $26. Should of cost me $13 more but I had enough from tinting my Jeep soft top. Bought the Insta - cling stuff from Walmart. 5%. I failed to clean my windows really good before hand, so I'm gonna be redoing some of it. I'm kinda particular. But this stuff handled the curve of the front window very well.

Yes, 5% is dark but I liked the look of it better than 20% . I'm usually standing up when under way anyway, especially at night. Fixing to head to the boat launch and see how it goes.

Ok, I get that it looks great. Grant you that. But does it make a functional difference? Perhaps it is just me but with blazing sun coming in from all directions, I can't see putting my sunglasses away or being any cooler for the tinting. So is this just a looks thing? Fine if so, because it does look great... Just more wondering if I am missing something.

For me it was more my wife wanting it, she sits in the passenger seat holding our little one, so she thinks it will cut down on the sun blaring in through the glass. Myself, I understand that the sun will be shining through the glass and into his/her face a very little amount of time while out on the boat, but I can keep using her comment as justification instead of me just saying it looks cool.

Thanks @tdonoughue . And I will say this, I did it for looks more than anything. However, the last 2 days I have noticed a tremendous difference in the sun and heat coming into the boat. It does make a difference I wasn't expecting.

I did mine for looks alone, but I can see my GPS screen much better now with the tint.
