About 2 months ago my 2020 AR240 had a drive shaft break aft of the impeller before it terminates in the pump. My dealer took a a week or two to look at it, Yamaha then took several weeks to approve the warranty, and parts were back ordered for a month. The dealer days most the parts are being shipped now, but the impeller housing and sleeve have had their back order dates pushed another 2 weeks. I got the part numbers from the dealer and believe I have found them in stock online. The dealer said they can use the parts but if they fail it wouldn’t be covered under warranty. Seems a little fishy to me, as the parts are OEM parts that come with a warranty.

At this point I have no problem paying $250 to get the parts to get my boat up and running before half the summer is over, my concern is the shaft breaking was a bigger problem than just a “manufacturer defect” and if it happens again or there is engine damage or something else crazy they will try to not cover it under warranty. I am actually rather confused why it’s a issue, the parts I plan on ordering are OEM Yamaha parts.

Anyway, I am curious if any of you have run into this or have any thoughts.

Shipping is nuts right now, both domestically and overseas. Container ships are still behind in being loaded/unloaded, and the US is still suffering from a lack of driver/trucks to move goods. Unfortunately, the delays are par for the current state of cargo.

This isn't the first time we've read about a shaft snapping - when did you take delivery of your boat?
 
Interesting observation.... I have train tracks that run back behind my property. That is one of the reasons we bought here so as not to have anyone behind us. I have a double lot so it is a good distance away.

Anyhow, Lately, I have been seeing full cars with shipping containers and product crates, a lot of building materials and such passing by a few times a day. Over the last year there have been mostly empty or very minimal. Perhaps this is an indication of things starting to clear up.

May of 2020, I believe the manufacture date was Feb 2020. Boat has about 70 hours on it, maybe 5 hours of tube towing, and a couple hours of wake surfing, rest was pretty normal transit time to/from the sand bar. I put the boat away in November, and the shaft broke on my first outing in April. I use salt away after every outing, and feel like a take pretty good care of the boat. The other shafts on here that broke looked exactly like mine, i had to look real close to make sure someone didn’t steal my pics! The one common thing I’ve noticed on the couple other shaft breaks were that they were also in salt water.
 
Out of curiosity, did Yamaha every divulge to you what material the shaft was made from?
 
I read through it when my shaft broke. It would my dealer doing the work, with Yamaha OEM parts, so his situation was a bit different.
The way I read the post, the work was done with OEM parts by his dealer, but outside of the warranty process...

Have your dealer get the parts from your source. If not wait for the parts… not the best solution but you Have seen what happens when working outside the process.

The person in question made repairs outside of the Yamaha process, it is my understanding in that case the repairs were made at an independent shop.
 
I just saw my neighbor’s 2020 AR210 parked in the street. He is putting it away (for the summer) apparently due to a faulty electrical component in the port throttle system that makes the engine stumble when pulling back the throttle. The part has to come from Japan. No telling when that will happen. I don’t exactly buy the diagnosis; but in this environment it would be hard for me not to scrounge for stock somewhere, say screw the warranty and fix it myself. All the dealers seem to do is hold your boat hostage all season with no resolution. I can’t say they are all at fault as they can’t get what they need through the direct OEM supply chain (warranty). I am just very glad I hung on to my 2006 at this point. It has been so reliable.

I believe the dealer said it was stainless steel, I’m no expert but it looked like stainless to me. Of note, that was in stock, I’m waiting for a impeller sleeve and pump housing, I think it’s the same part numbers for the 2021 boats, so that may very well be one of issues with 2021s not not getting delivered.

It’s been a couple weeks since I read the thread, or it might have been a different thread, but he took his boat to a non Yamaha dealer for the repairs and then had engine damage. His issue was the reason I posted my question, I am afraid Yamaha might try to do that to me if I have issues even though I am using a Yamaha dealer and OEM parts.

It all might be mute anyway, I called a couple different places that had 3-5 day ship times online to see if they actually had parts in stock, and they did not.

There is a national back order on impellers and sleeves.

This was my understanding as well. He used a Yamaha dealer/authorized shop, but went outside of the warranty process (with OEM parts). Since he decided to deviate from Yamaha Corporate's specified path, they claim no responsibility, as the repairs had not fully been vetted by their warranty team.
 
Which should be a giant warning on the real value of the warranty.

Yamaha will cover the cost of repair and replace needed parts, but if you opt for this repair option, Yamaha will reduce you warranty period and usage period by up to 4 months for each repair by retaining your disabled boat at the dealer while waiting for "special flavored" parts that take longer to ship, and providing undesired inspections for any damage. Warranty work is different and special than other repairs you actually pay cash on, and thus it takes much longer to complete repairs on a warrantied boat. If you would rather have your boat repaired sooner, pretending it's not under warranty, even if by our dealer network with OEM parts, any future issues connected by any means or smell or proximity to the non-paid-by-yamaha repair are excluded from warranty, this determination will be made by exclusively Yamaha.

You have been warned. The value of the warranty is much lower than the repairs, when you discount for the value of your ownership time.

Agree 100%. Yamaha has clearly demonstrated with their track record that their warranty is absolute garbage. They will go to any length to deny coverage it seems. Just read about some of these warranty coverage issues on this forum - it’s a complete joke.

I took my boat in this last winter still under warranty and wanted some minor things fixed - engine foam fallling down, decals on side loose, gel coat factory blemish fixed, etc. Yamaha denied all of these, lol. This guy’s experience above with the 27 foot boat was absurd - had engine failure within the first few months of ownership, had repair at authorized dealer, but Yamaha denied responsibility.

I’ve honestly never heard of a company as big as Yamaha with such a poor track record of fixing it’s own problems. I didn’t even consider extending my warranty past 3 years due to their seemingly abysmal customer service. YMMV of course.
