I'm looking at buying a 2018 Yamaha AR240. It's only got 38 hours on it. Guy says he took it in for an oil change and they told him they wouldn't do it until it has 50 hours on it.

It gives me a funny feeling, but guy says he's never had any problems and it runs great. The boat looks super clean. Price is fair.

I know these Yamaha motors are very reliable, but that seems pretty neglectful.

Part of me says run, but maybe it's not that bad?

If it has not had an oil change in 7 years the oil filter is probably rusted and leaking and the pump liner is probably swelled up and slamming the impeller that is like 5 1/2 hours a year And the first break in oil change is supposed to be done at 10 hours so someone is full of crap a dealer would never refuse to do an oil change that was actually very important and way overdue. Go to the local dealer with the hull number and see if they will look up the service records for you

7 year old oil that has been run for 38 hours would concern me.
Most of us change our oil every season because (some mythology here) the oil with the hard running we put our boats through a season looses some of it’s properties and may become acidic.

Have a mechanic look at the engines and a marine surveyor look at the hull and fittings

7 years is no good. It should be changed every year regardless of hours. 2 years at the very least.
Have it looked over by someone who can scan it and verify the hours and rpm running ranges

Even so, 38 hrs is pretty sus, IMHO. I would be concerned that the ECUs had been changed or something. I mean, I don't use my boat enough and my 2012 has like 165 hrs. on it....

And no oil change? Um, sounds negative to me...

So a dealer that makes a killing in labor charges to do an oil change says they wouldn’t change the oil until it has 50 hours on it….hmmm🤔. What about the 10 hour oil change ?

Oil changes have an engine hour requirement or a time based requirement. The time based requirement is because oxygen being the highly corrosive agent that is will oxidize the oil over time and breakdown the additive package. Synthetic oils are much better than conventional oils at resisting oxidation, and synthetics resist the vaporization associated with high revving engines better than conventional oils.
