So I have a Shorelander trailer for my SX190, my issue is the dust protectors keep coming off the bearing buddies and throwing grease everywhere. Wondering what could cause this and if any else had experienced it. I'm thinking maybe heat but that's just a guess.

I don‘t know what could be causing this for you…. Here is what I do.

Make sure the surface of the bearing buddy on the outside is clean and dry as well as the dust cap.
When the dust cap is on, push the center in so it sorta creates a little vacuum.
Wipe all excess grease out of the bearing buddy ahead of the piston.

Aside from wiping the outside of the BB with brake clean that’s what I have been doing

They are coming off due to heating of the bearing either because it is losing grease thru the bearing buddy (bad buddy) or you have a sticking caliper causing heat in the hub. But I see you have a 19'er and I assume you have no brakes? Or do you. I had this problem on my MFI trailer for my AR230 and replacing the caliper and bearing buddy, which solved the problem. The heat from the stuck caliper cooked the bearing buddy and the grease slung all over the rim. Never lost one on the front axle.

Temporary buddy bra.

The trailer for my 19ft has disc brakes on the trailer. When I checked both calipers were grapping fairly firmly so I am in process of replacing both. Hopefully this resolves my issue. Zipper how can you tell if the Bearing Buddy is cooked?

If it continues to leak grease.

It wasn’t leaking, it seems to have been overheating and blower the dust cap off and throwing grease all over the rim. Should have an update soon, brakes almost finished replacement

Similar issue here although it just happened once to me this weekend. Does it mean the bearing is screwed if it pukes the grease everywhere like this or do I just need to clean it up and get a new cap?
This happened on a very long and rough dirt road so I’m thinking it just vibrated off.

Your bearing should be fine as long as the piston is still pushing down on grease. See if the piston will rock when you push on the edge. Even if it doesn’t it’s probably fine as the piston is sealed. Just get a new BB, wipe off the dirt you can from the outside and replace the one that is on there with the new one and add grease to the new one.

That grease that flew everywhere was the overflow from over filling the BB and it was lying in there with the spring under the dust cap. Once the dust cap was gone the grease was free to exit and make a mess.

So I had a similar issue caliper was dragging (wouldn't release) and it caused so much heat that the grease started boiling out... Didn't get bad enough to throw the grease like above. As a temporary fix I pushed the piston back and bypassed the brakes. But I am concerned if that bearing is still good. I'm assuming it is as I towed it about 100 miles round trip and it wasn't even warm, and no other grease came out. I plan to see if I can just get the whole underside of the trailer rebuilt with proper salt water equipment to avoid any future issues.

I wish they would look at where the units are going (first hand). If its a southern region, it would be nice to pay a little more and get actual salt water rated items on the trailer. A little up front save a lot down the road.

I just tried to service my brakes and make sure they were working correctly for that exact issue. They seem to be ok. The braking wheels get pretty hot - I wouldn’t be able to leave my hand on a lug nut for more than a second or two - but both sides feel about the same temp.

Yeah I noticed before they always seemed to be quite warm. Since bypassing the brakes they are cool to the touch like the front two. Cant say I remember my previous trailers ever having this issue. The brakes must always be dragging on this trailer which also explains the extremely poor gas mileage I got in comparison to my last boat.

I had read in another thread that it was important to have the weight bias correct on these trailers as it affects the performance of the surge brakes.

On my most recent trip the non brake hubs were around 89° and the brake hubs were 104°, in my mind that’s not bad. All hydraulic disc brake pads will have some friction on the rotor when running down the road. If yours are too hot to touch they may need some attention. Make sure the calipers slide freely in the hanger and make sure the brakes are bled properly.
