Motor Sounds

So I went to add grease at the grease fitting (this is my first time doing this because I got the boat last June) and I noticed there was ZERO grease in the line for the starboard motor. Greased it up and the noise seemed to have went away. So what could this have been? I'm going to look at the schematics later and see where that fitting supplies grease too in order to determine what was making the noise.

Well if you're talking about greasing the bearing housing (on the back of the engine) then I'm not sure that would be what your issue is. Because all that grease does is basically provide a waterproof barrier for the bearing housing. It doesn't actually lubricate anything. But heck, maybe it's muffling the noise or something. I don't know.

While I was cleaning the grease and tools off my neighbors floating dock I found a random wood chip laying on the dock. No clue where this would have come from but maybeee....inside the pump? Nevertheless she seems to run good now!

Sounds like you found the culprit! Running good is always a good sign! Those damn random wood chips seem to show up when you least expect it!

EXCELLENT! Hope that is it.

Don't think there would be a correlation/causation here. Maybe the wood chip somehow ejected itself with all the other work you were doing?

If a bearing starts to go, it makes a high pitched whine, then smokey smell, then dollar signs start flashing in your brain......

@glass F'd up.. but true.. :yuck:

Glad to hear it is running smooth now. I was cruising near the Yamaha factory last year after a big rain and the lake was loaded with debris. I knew I caught a small stick or something because one engine sounded different, so stopped and cleaned it out. It still sounded a little funny. After stopping two more times to check the clean out, I found a very small wood chip floating in the tube. Is was hard to even scoop it out, but when I did everything was back to normal. Who knows why it would not eject out, but it hung out in there.
