Took the oldest to go snowboarding. Kissing Bridge is only about 30min from the house. Was a decently warm day (around 25), and it dumped an extra 6in or so on us while we were there.

$55/EA got us both a 90min lesson, boots, boards, and helmets. Spent another 3hrs or so on the bunny slopes afterwards. I've been riding a wakeboard for decades now, this was weirdly different. The whole "standing on a board that's sliding" is the same, but weight placement and turning is pretty different. After the first lesson I had it pretty figured out, but I need a LOT of practice before we graduate off the bunny slopes.

We fell a couple times, and once I re-aggrivated my neck injury. Totally worth it for the oldest to tell me "Best day ever dad" on the way home!

come on, it's beautiful outside right now

Here's two crappy pictures (he was a few hundred yards from me) of a juvenile eagle still learning how to get shit done. He went full splash-down for that fish, and almost got in too deep. Looks like he's calling for help, but he just took a couple of huge swings with those big wings, and dragged himself and the fish out successfully. I know all the adults were laughing at him, but dude had a good meal...

That geese pic is the beginnings of a really nice puzzle.

I see snow falling, because it's February and boating season is an agonizing three months away still 😣
Just make sure you have the boat ready for "false summer" in late March/early April. It's the one week of good weather we get until the 5th of July. LOL

Once your body figures it out you progress pretty fast. If you both got through your first lesson/practice and don't hate it you might get hooked. :)

I always recommend impact shorts (or a butt pad) when you're just getting started to protect your tailbone - I still wear impact shorts after riding for 25 years.

My season will start the last week of April, which is probably the earliest I can convince the marina to let me get into the wet slip.

I don't have anywhere to put the boat in March, other than the barn 180 miles away...

The boy has been googling snowboarding all week. Been talking to me about this that or the other technique he saw, or piece of equipment he wants. I would say he's pretty hooked already. Same kid that loves to ride the skimboard at the beach, so it tracks for his personality. Although I can't get him to ride a wakeboard to save my ass. No idea why.

I told him, we're going to keep renting equipment this year. Not enough season left to justify purchase. Coworker was telling me about a place in Ellicottville that will do "seasonal" rentals. Go in, get fitted for your equipment, and take it home with you. Rent it for the full season, then hand it back in springtime. Good chance we'll do that for him if he's still enthused next year. Might take the sting out of him outgrowing everything for the next 5-6yrs. I'll probably rent at least one more season if we stick with it. Good chance I'm done growing at 45 though, so I might consider getting my own equipment. We'll see.

I do love the premise that I don't have to hold a rope, and I don't have to walk back up the hill. Those parts seem/feel like it's the right amount of physical exertion for me :D

I grew up with buddies at the ski shop so always had a free/discounted board rental. There are enough variations in board profile and edge shape that it can be really hard to get comfortable like that. I got a lot better when I stuck to one board for a couple of seasons.

Ugh... lake still froze over. Gonna go visit the big one weekend after valentine's day.

Nothing better than weekdays on the hill. I was done by noon without lift lines 😂. No view of Rainier today.IMG_1731.jpeg

Who was at fault here??

Sea Plane I think. "Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 91.115 places collision avoidance responsibly on the seaplane pilot with the language, "Seaplane pilots shall, insofar as possible, keep clear of all vessels and avoid impeding their navigation."
