New member and happy to join the community! Looking for a bit of help already lol!

After having a MasterCraft and wakeboarding for years and us not boarding a fraction of what we used to, we were looking for a more well rounded boat. Our search led us to here and I just picked up a 2022 255xd with 36hours on it. First few times out were okay other than what felt like a limiter kicking in at 5k on one outting that others on here say is addressed by stopping then reversing a bit. This hasn’t recurred.

Well, this past weekend we went out to a local sandbar. No issues all day then on the way back to dock, starboard engine would fire up and die almost instantly even after numerous attempts to start. Ended up limping to ramp on port motor.

Once home, tried to flush and was finally able to start starboard up by bumping the throttle way up immediately after the motor fired up. I could keep the engine running by keeping the rpm elevated (probably 3k and up). It did seem to run rough though when comparing it to port engine. Attempting to put it back at idle would result in stalling out either immediately or within a couple seconds. No indicators on dash.

Next morning woke up and tried again. Roughly same results but after playing with it a bit it would successfully idle more often than not. Being a tech years ago, if this were a car I’d suspect an idle air control module or a weak fuel pump/clogged filter. Anyone run into a similar issue and what was the culprit? With it now not acting up each time, I hate to bring it into the shop for them to not be able to duplicate it.

Thanks in advance!!

Since no codes indicated, start with the basics new spark plugs. There isn't any replaceable fuel filters on these boats. And there isn't an IAC either. If you think its a fuel pump then you can swap them since each engine has its own pump assembly.

Make sure all intake hoses are on properly and tight. The hose that goes from the intercooler to the throttle body are know to come off if not really tight

Thanks for the info and pointers! I’ll check hoses and plugs this weekend. I’ll check pumps as well.

While it doesn't answer "why does it run when giving RPM" I would still check the easy things like clean hatch kill switches and lanyard kill switches. When losing power while underway, those can be the culprit.

However with a rough sounding motor, I'd definitely lean into the basics of fuel/air/spark.

  1. Was your gas good and from a known station? Try adding some treatment to the gas just in case (Yamaha Ring Free or Seafoam).
  2. Check plugs for wet or fouling.
  3. Pull the airbox cover off and make sure something didn't make a nest in there.
  4. Run some weed wacker line down your gas vent to make sure it's not clogged.
  5. Check oil level to make sure it's not overfilled.

Plugs… I’ve seen many issues fixed with plugs. The other thing you could try is swapping the coil over packs.

Next beyond the other guys suggestions would be to check the wiring, especially the grounds. Start at the batteries. Unplug all the multipin connectors and check for corrosion. Maybe a quick shot of contact cleaner in each one, some compressed air to dry it then re assemble.

The induction system… check to make sure the insulation in the engine is all secured so it can’t swing over and block air flow. Of course check air filter elements.

That 5000 rpm limit is intriguing.

If you do not have a service manual get one. You were a tech, so you will find this invaluable. I also have a suspicion about the ignition trigger, this has an Ohm range that can be checked with a multi meter.

Start simple..change the plugs and make you don’t have old gas.

Do they make a print version of the service manuals or is everything digital?

I prefer the paper book for all of my toys, but with customers i download because i would need a library wing to the shop. 😁
