Single hooks in place of treble hooks

Came across this article the other day when I was researching putting single hooks on my spoons and possibly other lures. I thought it was interesting.

Single Hook Lures for trout just make sense! Most trout anglers release their catch. Barbed treble hooks cause much more damage than barbless single hooks, and increased post release mortality.

I swap out all my Trebles for Singles. Doesn't matter if I'm trolling for keeper Tuna or sight-casting for catch-and-release Wipers. Singles are WAY safer for the fish and for the angler.

Alrighty, swapped out the treble hooks on my most productive spoons for single hooks. The wonder bread pattern high speed spoon at the bottom glows in the dark so brightly you can read by it…



I also added a barrel swivel at the suggestion of the Gamakatsu salesman to the top of the lure.



I had to put on larger split rings to accommodate the larger hooks. These Gamakatsu hooks are so freaking sharp!

I guess it looked like the contrast I see on baitfish. I’m trying to mix things up this year and see if the fish like different combinations.

As an fyi, the biggest lake trout I’ve caught was on the all silver spoon.

While this is not relevant to single hooks, fish also see ultraviolet light or reflected UV light. So, when we look at a lure we don’t see everything the fish does, same when we look at a bait fish, about the only thing one can do is to keep trying different combinations on different days as fish are also affected by the moon phases and barometric pressure.

A couple of jigs and a crank bait or two and you’d be having wallies for dinner, or maybe you’d tie into a pike aka fresh water barracuda aka garbage disposal with fins, that’ll get you attention!

I’ve caught a lot of fish on that wonder bread pattern high speed spoon, trout, lake trout, and salmon.

I haven't tried those long-shank Siwash hooks. When I say Siwash in my head, I think of the sound Ultraman often made.

I swap my trebles on all of my hard lures and spoons with Owner Single Replacement; Gamakatsu Magic Eye or 510; or Mustad Kaiju.

And wow... I just realized the weird coincidence. Ultraman fights Kaiju... so I wonder if Siwash is actually related... given that all of the companies mentioned here (except Mustad) are Japanese.
